Star kit - 924 type - restore project

Loading...

Hi all ! I'm about to embark on a restore project of my first Star kit. All arrived today (ebay purchase, I think I paid a little too much) and is more intact hardware-wise than I thought via the pictures.

The good:

1)The tom mount is all intact, with the exception of a nut and bolt and washer.

2)There is one spur included, just the steel, no washer and rubber. I can fashion one at our shop with no issue, or purchase a replacement? If anyone know an "off the shelf" spur that would fit please let me know.

3) All rims are there for the toms and bass drum.

4) Only missing one bass drum claw and tension rod.

5) The shells are all in very good shape (except the snare which is not part of the original set). They are all painted gray interiors, and there is only one flaky spot on the floor tom that will glue up with no issue. The luan is a bit rough so that will need to be addressed.

6) The wrap (a red swirl satin) is in mostly very good shape. One minor crack/split on one of the bass drum casings. The kit is filthy but that's no biggie.

7) The cymbal mount on the bass drum is still there, though incomplete.

The bad:

1) There is one casing and tension rod missing on the ride tom.

2) There is one claw and tension rod missing on the bass drum.

3) There are 6 casings missing on the floor tom, as well as tension rods.

4) The aforementioned missing one bass drum spur.

5) The aforementioned cymbal mount on the bass drum is incomplete.

6) Missing the knurled knob and guts for the muffler on the floor tom.

So ... my questions at this point are as follows:

1) If anyone knows of a source for these "924" style lugs/casings I would love to know. Or, if anyone knows of a casing that I could use in their place that would fit the pre-drilled holes on the floor tom I could just use them on the bottom (until I score another drum that has them?).

2) If someone could take a close up picture or pictures of their cymbal mount I'd really appreciate it. I have a machine shop and could have one of our wizards come up with something that might work. Or, if there is a source to replace one that would be ideal (but not likely I presume).

3) If anyone knows if there is a source for bass drum spurs that would be a direct fit for Star drums please let me know. If not, I can have one fashioned here.

4) The drums feel real dry to me. Should the interiors (painted gray) be oiled or waxed or sealed? They are a bit rough and flaky. I have heard that some folk seal them with poly don't know if I want to brighten them up too much. Open to suggestions.

5) Any suggestions for cleaning the wrap safely? It has a swirl texture.

This is going to be a lot of fun and my two kids, the jr. drummers in the house, are looking forward to tackling it with me. I'll attach pictures from before arrival and will update as we go. Special thanks go to Ralf and his most excellent site on Star drums.

I have lugs for the floortom, and would like to hepl finishing that beautiful kit - but I am living in Denmark, so depending on where you are, postage can be prohibitive....

Hello Jon - What a fantastic offer! I'm in upstate NY in the U.S. Any idea what postage might be? Customs? Thanks for reaching out!-Doug

I haven´t weighed them - and of course not the complete package - but:

I guess I could pack 6 floortom lugs and end up under 500 grammes.

That would be @ 28$ signed for - to which you would have to add customs.

See what you can find in the states - if they don´t pop up, you are very welcome to send me a PM, and I will send you a package. I am PayPal registered, when it comes to that.

Regards

Jon - Thanks again. Ok, sounds like a plan. In the meantime, do you have other Star parts as well?

What a rare find! Don't know the price you paid, but considering the unique finish, I don't think that ...

Concering the missing parts: I've seen another mate looking for such lugs - I think it will be rather difficult to find them. He states he searches them for two years now ...

Maybe ST Drums (here in Germany) has some spare lugs from Sonor which should look very similar (as Star copied this style at that time). Edit 13/10/04: CORRECTION - see two posts below: Sonor parts shall NOT fit! (Thanks to FloydZKing.)

BD spur: pay attention to the diameter - and you can use any bar that fits into the bracket.

We need a pic of the cymbal mount. I hope it's not the one I assume ('cause that one will be almost impossible to find) ...

Cleaning: I recomment a mild soap and water solution. You may use ethyl alcohol or cleaning solvent if necessary, but first check it out at a hidden place (area below a lug etc.). Could be that it dissolves the fluted surface!

Conc. shipment to USA from DK: Maybe it's possible for Jon to consider a shipment with a letter mail (registered mail) and NOT as a parcel? As an example: At the moment I can offer two 16" drumheads from Germany to USA for EUR 10, using this way of shipment. There's a limit in the height of the letter, but those lugs shouldn't cause problems with this. Just an idea.

Oh - and thanks for your compliments to my website - appreciated!

Hello,

If your cymbal mount is the style that mounts on a triangular base, the pieces are hard to find, as Ralf said.

I have previously posted pictures of my cymbal arm here

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=32042&highlight=star+cymbal+mount&page=2

on page 2 of the thread. That particular thread might give you some extra info so check it out!

If that is the type of arm you have and you want more pics, PM me. I would be happy to help

Sonor sharktooth lugs may not be a suitable replacement because they have a taller offset from their shells than a standard lug. It would be like using a BD lug for a tom - the rod wouldn't line up properly with the receiver nut.

looks like a nice project. but the lugs on the tom are slightly off set while the other drums are not. probibly from another kit.

i have kick t's and claws, but can't sell one from the set. sorry. but i'm sure some fellow forumites will be able to help.
