Thank you John for the info. Man these are some thin shells. This is my first attempt at working on an old kit, so please "be gentle" with me hahaha. Here is a pick of the mufflers inside the base and a shot of the edges. I know you said to sand the edges real smooth, do I need to blend in the "step/shoulder" in with the radius? Hope that in not too dumb of a question. Thank you
Wow....those are clean! As for the sanding, it doesn't matter if you sand it in or not. In order to leave it as unmolested as possible, I would say if you can do it, then that is fine, but if not, don't wear yourself out trying to avoid it.
As for the mufflers, I wolud take them completely out (neccesary if you are going to lacquer the interior) and dab some mineral oil on them at the rivets and other pivot points to keep them from corroding. The inside of the shell is where you can make the most difference in the sound of these drums. I sand them, tedious work but worth it, and then apply a couple of coats of lacquer. I don't use poly as it is a plastic and wil change the integrity of the wood and make the sound more plastic as well. I use Deft from Lowe's. Either gloss or satin, does not matter.
