Norma is just another stencil brand. Too bad the original Star tom is missing. These are old. I love it! I have yet to have a kit with the bass muffles. You scored a very special kit here. Keep on the look out for that tom. Living in your area though...elbow to elbow people..not much chance you will, but we can always hope. Know that this kit has survived all these years is a good thing because that mean there could be others out there. A local music store likely sold bunches of these in the early 60s. Now we are going to have to keep our eyes open for a tom with that badge for you.

Nailing down the year is going to be nigh on impossible unless someone walks into your house and says "Hey, those were mine when I was a kid, I got 'em for Christmas in 196_!" That pedal looks more late 70s early 80s to me. The one that would have shipped with this kit would have been the stamped steel model more than likely.

The tom looks original. Just has a Norma label on it, not a big deal.

I do have the original 13" tom on the kit, the "norma" was a extra tom they had rigged on the kit. I know the beater on the petal is not original. I saw one like this one in the 66 catalog. Looks close anyway. I see these guys really are impressed with the hat stand. HEHEHE

Nice. Yes, very early 60s. The strainer and lugs are gone by 64 best I have been able to discern. The strainer will work nicely, I just found I had one and rebuilt it by taking it apart and cutting a piece of dead drumhead and using it for a nylon type washer, It works well and keeps tension nicely. If you want to change it out for something more modern, I would love to have it. This is a little of what I do with these old shells. Tape off the edges of the wrap and all the outside holes to keep lacquer from getting all over the wrap. Sand the interior of the shells smooth and lacquer them at least one coat. Make sure to get the edges smooth as well, and lacquer them as well. They will have a deep, resonant tone that will likely ring a bit until you mess with them a bit annd learn how to control it, but I can say two words...well one word...MoonGels. They work well to keep the overtones down. A really deep tone and not really a lot of range, but the bass drum is a cannon.

Johnny, can you tell me what heads I need to put on these drums?

Johnny, can you tell me what heads I need to put on these drums?

For the bass, I am now using anm EQ1. Sounds great on my 22, have not tried one on my 20 yet because my 20 is a 9 ply. I have a 20 3 ply in the works, but don't have it yet. For the rest, what sound are you looking for? These really may not have a huge range, so finding the right heads could be a challenge. I found, in a mom-n-pop, some NOS Remo "Encore" heads that work extremely well with my 3 ply WMP kit. But it has been modified by the addition of the maple veneer on the interior. I don't like the sound of Ambassadors on my drums, but that is me. I would think try a Genera Dry on one of the toms. As for reso, Attack work well. You can outfit the entire kit for 50 bucks, including shipping.

Go here: www.zzounds.com (http://www.zzounds.com/item--ATTDHAPACKB) find the heads you want, Attack for instance, and the open up a page for http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-ATT-DHAPACKB and then call zzounds and they will beat the price (or shipping) on the exact set of heads. This is the best deal on res heads I have found. They are not good for batters, except the snare heads. You will have to buy a snare side head.

For other heads, use www.drumfactorydirect.com he has good prices on heads you can't even get from other sources, like 16" bass heads for example, no one else carries them, you have to special order them.

Thank you John for the info. Man these are some thin shells. This is my first attempt at working on an old kit, so please "be gentle" with me hahaha. Here is a pick of the mufflers inside the base and a shot of the edges. I know you said to sand the edges real smooth, do I need to blend in the "step/shoulder" in with the radius? Hope that in not too dumb of a question. Thank you
