From Black Label

... would like to find out what wood was used in their construction. ... I heard that a lot of the Japanese kits was made of Luan, ...

Yes, that kind of wood (called Luan or Lauan) was often used at those drums.

From Black Label

... but I also understand that typically the Star kits, like Yamaha etc, was not the typical cheap stencil kits. Thanks guys.

In general the first kits from Star (I don't know much about Pearl/ Yamaha etc. of that time) were not dedicated to be 'high-end' kits, but mainly cheap kits indeed.

Star changed it's marketing strategy only in the very last days and when they switched their name to Tama. They then and furtheron produced cheap series as well, but also started to take part in the better quality lines and innovative hardware.

Cheers, Ralf

Thanks Ralf. Here’s pics of my newly rewrapped Yamaha/Star kit - can you tell from the badge the era of manufacture? Thanks and regards

Hello,

Most probably not earlier than 1970 until the switch to Tama in 1974.

Cheers, Ralf
