STAR drums and it's turn to TAMA in 1974

From Ralf

- Those T-rods at the bass drum I know only from Trixon (a German manufacturer at that time). But the rest is not Trixon-like.- And the rail consolette is similar to Star's - but not an original Star one.- The shape of the lugs: also not typical for Star.So that's NOT a Star kit (my opinion!), but nevertheless - if cleaned up:D - a nice cool drumset.Ralf

Hi,The t-rods on the bass drum are a copy of Trixon,If they were real Trixons they would have the trixon name at the end of the wing,,The japanese did copy alot of drum parts to used on the sets they made.Copys of trixon t-rods,slingerland lugs, rogers, ete even Ludwig lugs, the list goes on and on, i have seen on 60s sets..mikey

I am sure they are cheap 60s MIJ copies and not actual Trixons. This blue onyx kit is awesome though- sounds so resonant for luan- I have been performing with it in two configurations (see pics) I haven`t actually ever played the 20" bass drum it came with it`s just in storage- I`ve been using the 16x16 as a bass drum.

It has no badges, the only clue is the lugs which look alot like STAR, the strange t-rods like Trixon and one of the original heads said "Celebrity". hmmmmm....

Can you, please, make a close-up pic of the lugs?

Mikey777 is right, the T-rods should carry the 'Trixon' script on one of its' sides,

if they were original.

Getting interested in understanding Hoshino/Star drums a bit more, I picked up this little Hoshino kit on auction last night. I`ll post more pics and detailed info when it arrives. Can anyone date this one?

It`s 20,14,12 with 14x5 snare.

With that blade arm and the rail, I vote 60s on this one. The plate suggests the older mount. The wrap however is a different story as Star did not use solid color wraps, as far as I know. Is it possible this is rewrapped? Those are nonetheless good looking drums!

hmmmmm.... re-wrap is really uncommon in Japan as it`s all imported material and a bit pricey... I`ll be able to tell when I take them apart. I see more solids like this in the early 70s stuff so maybe they kept the 60s style mount and used it here in an early 70s kit (my instinct says 72-73 on this) I see black and white solids becoming more popular in other MIJs in that time period. Pearl made a RocknRoller kit in solids in that time period as well... thinking

funny- the Lone Ranger would approve of that one!

Luan - or whatever you call it- I just played a show last night- a jazz gig in a big hall with a Pearl 69 Valencia- Fiberskyns top and bottom on the toms- a clear Evans EQ4 on the bass (empty with a front felt strip and Vintage Bomber beater) - this kit sounded as sweet as any you could put up against it. It`s the heads and tuning- the touch- I dig em. The Hoshino kit was 150$ what a steal IMO

Hi,

@ jonnistix: '... The wrap however is a different story as Star did not use solid color wraps ...':

Correct! Here's the solution:

Hoshino drums = a Japanese drum producing family called Hoshino Kougyou

Star (and lateron: Tama) drums = the Japanese drum producing family called Hoshino Gakki

Both companies were located in Nagoya, Japan.

But: they never merged, they never made something together.

The brand 'Hoshino' (= made by Hoshino Kougyou) often copied other hardware parts (like Star did).

But they (= 'Hoshino') often mixed different looking parts together: some were looking like Pearls, then like Rogers, then like Slingerlands, etc.. And some looked funny like a mix together.

The brand 'Hoshino' disappeared in the 70s. ('Luxor' was also one of their knock-off brands.)

So, please kindly keep 'Hoshino' drumsets out of this Star thread.;)
