So, I'm New & I'm Planning to do Something "Crazy"...

Loading...

Well, it's been a couple of weeks at least since I've posted...I wasn't going to say anything...

...and I'm sure there's several "I told you so's" coming...

however, I'm finding out how difficult it is to veneer the interior of the drums. the main issue being the seam. You see wood veneer is very stiff...and I've not been using a softener prior to installing the interior ply of gumwood...and between splits and the waving of the edges at the seam...this is difficult...and my kingdom for a shell press!

Basically, I've went and shot about $75 worth of veneer learning the ins and outs of this process... I basically have to rip it back out and then sand free all of the Titebond III ...which, is gonna suck...and basically buy more and start over...

So, now I'm kinda taking a break and I'm re-evaluating the veneer...I'm trying to decide if it's worth it...and for what it's worth, it is gorgeous...(sigh) I wonder if I shouldn't get veneer that has the grain running the other way...it is FAR easier to mold...

On a positive note, I got my estimate from Precision drum co...they'll not only cut my new bearing edges...they'll also install the black glass glitter wrap for me...for a penny or two... ;)

Oh hey - you tried something adventurous and imaginative, coulda worked and you'da been a hero! Leave it to the always frustrating inanimate *things* not to cooperate! :)

I'm one of those who tried to steer you away from the interior laminate, and I'd never think of saying told you so. Instead I say keep up the interesting work, no doubt all are rooting for you, and you'll likely end up with some very nice shells.

Well,

Everything kinda got put on hold. Last semester of college and funding it straight out of pocket. So, they will get done...it's just gonna be a while.

Here's where they are now...

The veneering wound up going kinda horribly wrong. It would seem that unless you have a shell press (like...a real one) it is about impossible to get the veneer to sit flat and not wrinkle to death...the outside of the drum is one thing...as vacuum bags work wonderfully...the inside is another!

So, lately I've been slowly chipping out all of the glue and bad veneer...

My next course of action may just be to stain and lacquer the interiors of the drums. Veneer is just too pretty and expensive to ruin like this...and they still sound good...the veneer was mostly cosmetic...but not really practical...

So, lesson learned...but, I will be getting some things done on it...just might not be as fast as I had hoped!Hurting

Stay tuned...I'm still here!

Keep on chippin! Looking forward to your progress...

I've been fooling with the idea of covering a 20" MIJ BD shell with some birch veneer, very thin stuff. I don't have a vacuum bag, wondering if just tensioning it over the shell with tape at the overlap will work...veneer is available in sections much larger than required to cover a 20" BD, so may test on another shell.

Will also post with pics....if it works :)

Well, it's been years since I've posted on this...

Basically, there's more to the story...

Turns out, the only drum that wasn't out of round was the bass drum...I couldn't get the floor tom or rack tom to turn out...and the chipping...basically destroyed the rack tom...So, both were given a viking funeral...I nearly did the same with the bass drum and almost decided to give up on the whole thing...

Then I found out that the guy that sold me these drums had overdosed and passed away...which, sucks. He leaves behind a little boy...

I'm going to keep on trucking through on this project.

I'll try to update as soon as I can.

I’m back. And yes...it’s been a while. Life, ya know?

Here’s what’s up with this project...

The original 12 & 16” drums were in such bad shape and out of round that I had to “put them to pasture” they went up like a book of matches. This leaves just the 20” bass drum left from the original kit. It almost went into the fire ring too...until I found an super cheap 12” tom on ebay...

I think it might have been a Whitehall or a Stewart. Someone had wrapped it in horrible wood grain contact paper over the old red sparkle...I peeled all of this off.

Then, on the side of the drum, someone had put the original Tom mount back on the drum over a whopping hole that someone else had made for what looked like a good old-fashioned Pearl tom mount (three screws in a triangular patter with a 7/8” tom arm).

This morning I finished sanding the patching I did. I’ve come to find that “Weldwood” by JB weld works great for shell repairs, and it’s somewhat easier and more malleable than dowels/glue. Especially for large holes...

After this had cured overnight, I sanded all the patches down to the correct shell height (very slowly and methodically) without too much shell damage. I then used some 5 min 2-part epoxy over the patches to really sandwhich the patch between two layers of resin. As soon as this dries, I plan to sand it smooth.

Long gone are my hopes of doing an nice veneer on the inside. Instead I’ve decided to not fight what was originally there (paint) and opt for some Rustoleum “Gretsch Silver Sealer”. This is especially prudent given all the holes on this kit I’ve filled/will have to fill. I plan on using the good ‘ole heavy oil base stuff too!

I’ve managed to score a new floor Tom for $15 from a college kid on Facebook marketplace. I’m going to pick that up soon as well. It’s a 14” tom...which, oh well lol...

Plans are still on for putting all new hardware on the kit. I’ve become a big fan of drumfactorydirect.com. The hardware I’m updating this with will not be close to stock at all. I’m going to update the vast majority of it with Gibraltar components. I will not be adding a rail mount (opting for snare basket) or a ride cymbal mount to the bass drum shell.

I will be putting Walopus Wrap on this kit. I’ve found a wonderful sparkle finish there that’s both modern-ish and pays tribute to the old-fashioned sparkle wraps these drums have had.

The mission now is to both rebuild this kit out of orphan drums as much as just finishing something I started 15 years ago when I bought the kit. I plan to buy the kit a full set of new heads/cases and take it out on some shows eventually.

Here’s hoping! I am trying to get this kit finished in the next year or so...

So,

I've updated the title of this thread and I've cleaned up some of the posts I've placed in here just so things seem more focused.

I have just scored a steel Gambles Import Co. Snare drum on ebay for ~$35 + Shipping.

More to come!

Well, Ive added another “orphan” to the set.

I managed to score a 14” gambles snare drum on eBay. It’s....gonna need some work. But, I’m looking forward to bringing this one up to snuff...

Paid $35 for it.

Thoughts?
