Snare drum shootout

Loading...

Hey guys and gals,

Recently, I've picked up a nice little snare drum collection, in addition to my vintage 1960s Ludwig drums (22, 13, 16 sizes). I think it will be fun trying these in various settings.

Out of the following, what would be your top snare picks for blues or R&B types of settings (or any kind of groove music for that matter)? No right or wrong answers, and feel free to elaborate on your thoughts/opinions on these. My general feeling these days has been that the deeper drums have a more rich sound, to my ears. Talk amongst yourselves.

60s Ludwig Supra 5x14

Newer Ludwig Supra 6.5x14

Newer Ludwig Black Beauty 6.5x14

Newer Ludwig Hammered Bronze 6.5x14

Old Ludwig Acrolite 5x14

Elvin Jones signature Yamaha 7x14

Steve Jordan signature Yamaha 6.5x13

Old Slingerland Radio King 5.5x14

60s Ludwig Jazz Festival 5x14

I know...I think this pretty much covers it all, but having fun with them.

I've heard good things about those old Rogers drums. That could be next. :)

Out of that list for blues and R&B? The Radio King would be my first choice.

I'm partial to wood snares, but there's not a heap in that bunch. You could probably get a great sound out of any of them.

My Radio King snare is quite funky, in a good way. I can see it working well in many situations.

My choice is the meat behind the beat. Anyone of these drums can be played in any situation with the correct player behind them. It's not the drum, it's the drummer! I remember reading an article about Bonzo playing Jason's kid kit, the writer said it STIL SOUNDED LIKE BONZO!

I've told my students this for years, it's not the drum...it's the drummer sitting behind it!...that's why I still use my favorite Max Roach quote in my signature...read it & learn something..."Play the drum - don't let it play you"

"Play the drum...don't let it play you" - Max Roach

1968, 1974 & 1984 Rogers Dyna•Sonic COB
1971, 1976 Slingerland GK Sound King
1973 Slingerland Festival
1920's-40's Slingerland (US Military) Field Snares (6)
19?- Ludwig Field Snare (US Marines)
1960's Premier Gold Glitter Student Snare kit
1960's-? MIJ Snares (way-way too many)

Truly great words of wisdom from Max! Cool quote indeed.

ive got the lighter side of 20 vintage snares that i love. two of my favorites are the ludwig 5x14 pioneer and my 48-52 wfl supreme concert model, which is essentially a 6.5 pioneer.
