@nickmues: You are 100% correct. There was a wrap on the shells at one time which was removed. However, no refinishing was done at all. The current appearance of the exterior shells is exactly how they looked upon removal of the wrap. The somewhat "glossy" appearance might be due to remaining adhesive residue.
