Slingerland Set30,20,16 set. Good deal?

I'm going to be taking a look at those 3 slingerland shells tomorrow. I know the picture does not tell much and the description is vague, but I was thinking that $500 was probably a great price for those shells. I'm a recording engineer and would like something larger to add to the arsenal. 30 inch kick drums can't be that common, this will be the largest set I've ever seen.

Anyway, from my perspective it seems like a unique set and a good deal, I'll get to hear them in my studio space tomorrow. Does anyone have a similar slingerland set that can comment, any thoughts in general from anyone?

The rock 9 is being sold seperatly, I think he wants $500 for it. I've recorded one before and loved it, if I had the $$ I would grab it as well.

I have not looked at the set.But if i was you when you do i would check the re-cut edges on the bass drum.See what they look like a home re-covered drum or a shop re-covered drum..Ask questions on who did the work on the drum..Why i say this is when someone re-covers a drum you have to re-cut the edges and if not done right it will change the sound of the drum.I would also check the toms or ask if they have been re-covered...Mikey

Mikey brings up several good points. Check that stuff out.

I believe the reason why some drum wrap companies want to ship wrap that is 1/4 off of the bearing edge (on each side) is so that you don't have to re cut those edges. Short wrap would be definitely a sign or a re-wrap.

*edit* re-read the ad, and the drums were painted with nitrocellulouse. Good paint for instruments. But who did it? This is what I would ask...

And being that the Premier snare has been altered with non-original hoops, I would definitely offer lower on it. Yes, it's rare, but is not original. One of those goes for $500-750 in good, original condition.

Unless this kit was done by one of the most very famous drum customisers or repair facilities/remanufactured by a famous drum company, I would definitely offer somewhere around $750 for the entire works (all of the drums) and walk if he goes over $800. If it were done by a good shoppe, ask for receipts and work orders. The drums are rare, but are probably not worth over $1k in this market as they have been altered.

My neighbor's 57 Buick with a new moon roof cut in to it and 24 in wheels is also unusual. But, it's almost worthless.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Kinda my point.

The problem is when these guys build a hot rod, they think they can get all of the money they put into the car. On rare occasions, they do (if they're Boyd Coddington or Chip Foose). But in the end, it's usually a vintage car that is only that particular car in name only. Most beginner hot rod builders are bitterly disappointed when they barely recover the costs of paint and new wheels when they go to sell their creation.

I only hot rod worthless and terminally ugly drums. What's the worst that's going to happen if/when I sell my mongrel Premiers? I bought them for nearly nothing, and now have a good looking AND unique kit. But if I end up selling them for, say $300- I got my use out of them and now they're just a used kit. I have had a whale of a time hot rodding them and now playing them...

I say he goes for all of the drums for $750, and that's probably all of the money.

copy of ad & pics for reference..

For sell is my entire personally customized drum kit for $2400, that is only missing a tom tom to be complete. This is a one of a kind kits with a sound and look that I guarantee will turn both ears and eyes of people to you at live shows, practice halls, music stores, or recording studios. The kit possess a very "big" sound that I worked with to implement into various musical genres. I devoted a lot of time and large sums of money to restoring and building up this kit, but do to hard times I am selling my kit either as pieces, in bundles, or as the entire kit. If you have any questions or have any interests please email me. Hope we can do business. Directly below is a price list of my kit, then below that is some more information on the pieces of the kit, and at the bottom are some pictures; I can gladly email you more pictures of any item that you wish to view, if you email me.

For the entire set - Slingerland 3 piece, Premier Heavy Rock Nine snare, DW hardware, and Paiste 2002 cymbals- I am asking for $2000.00, but I willing to take reasonable offers and/or negotiate.

Slingerland 30x16 kick/bass, 20x18 floor tom, 16x16 floor tom 3 shell piece - $500

Premier Heavy Rock Nine customized snare -$500

DW Hardware complete bundle 8000 series double kit pedal with bag and extras, 5000 series hi hat stand, quantity 3 of 5000 series boom/straight stands, and a 9000 series heavy snare stand - $500

Paiste 2002 cymbals 15" Sound Edge hi hats ($300), 18" Medium crash ($200), 20" crash ($225), 24" ride ($325), or my entire Paiste cymbals full bundle - $700

All together in two years I spent some $4000.00 to initially buy the pieces- shells, snare, cymbals, and hardware- and then extra to refinish the snare and 30x16 bass drum.

I am more than willing to be negotiable with my prices, but please no low ball offers and I really would like to sell either the entire kit or as multiple bundles.

If you would like some more information about my kit please read on ... or you can skip to the pictures below.

I purchased the Premier Heavy Rock Nine snare as a used piece in mint condition two years back. The snare with original badge was made in 1983 and is a combination of birch shell plies inside with a brass shell outside to get a unique characteristically tone. Since the original purchase I have changed the original hoops to a pair of die cast hoops and changed the heads to Remo three months ago- Emperor X on top and a clear ambassador snare head on the bottom; the Remo heads on this snare had little usage and abuse by me. To match my Slingerland color theme I had the die cast hoops powered coated and baked and the snare brass professionally refinished to a low sheen black finish. The refinish can take a real beating and has never flaked or peeled or show signs it ever will. This is a vintage and rare snare to come by and with the black finish made this snare appealing and unique for a Heavy Rock Nine.

I purchased the Slingerland shells as three separate pieces in the span of two years. The bass/kick drum is a 30x16 with the original 1963-1969 badge. I had the bass drum shell and hoops professionally refinished to a high grade nitrocellulose gloss black multiple coats color- the nitrocellulose paint really makes a difference in helping preserve the natural sound of the wooden shells. The heads on the bass drum were changed three months ago to Remo Powerstroke 3 heads, hence have little use. This bass drum is in fantastic playable condition for its age and the refinish is beautiful. The 20x18 floor tom has the original early 1970s badge. The wrap is in good condition with only a few average scuff marks, yet it really is no eye sore, still in the original Black Beauty wrap. I change the heads three months ago to Remo Emperor top and Ambassador bottom. The 16x16 floor tom has the original late 1970s to early 1980 badge. The wrap is in good condition with only a few average scuff marks, yet it really is no eye sore, still in the original Black Beauty wrap. I change the heads three months ago to Remo Emperor top and Ambassador bottom. All that is missing is a tom tom, which I never purchased for the kit.

I purchased the Piaste 2002 cymbals all brand new less than a year ago for $1314.40, excluding CA tax. The cymbals are all in great condition, never abused and with little usage. They barely have any stick marks and appear to be in store like condition than as used cymbals. As an entire set these cymbals all sounded great and create a massive wall of sound with each other. Please check out Piaste.com for sound samples and descriptions.

I purchased all the DW hardware brand new less than a year ago for $1,030.00, excluding CA tax. All the pieces are functioning correctly and look great with minimal signs of wear and abuse. This bundle of DW hardware covers everything you need in hardware for a drum set from kick pedal to snare and cymbal stands to the hi hat stand.
