Slingerland Purple Satin Kit

Loading...

I have a Slingerland 6 peice kit from the 60's. I believe that it is a rare kit, because it has a tripple tom mount, and it is in purple satin. It is not a complete kit, however, the bass drum was replace in the 70's. I am wondering how rare the kit would be, because I have never seen this color after a lot of looking, I have seen white, red and green satin, but not purple. I also haven't been able to find another kit with the tripple tom mount. Is it worth trying to track down an origional bass, or should I just keep the set as is. The set also has an Apollo snare, and I haven't been able to track down any info about the snare. The kit is a work in progress, and I want to get new heads on it, and make it playable again. It is in good shape, just dusty. If anyone has any info about the stuff, or suggestions on what I should do, please let me know.

There's a finishes section too for Slingerland.

Do a little poking around.... lots of groovy stuff to learn !!

Hi sounds like a nice set but with out photo's iam guessing you set is not from the 60's more like the mid 70's.The set sounds like a "60-N" set up.Slingerland nevered made a thipple tom mount on the 60-n set the tom mount was a double with a single tom mount is front of it on the bass drum so you would have two mounted tom plates on the bass drum. The bass would be a 22" the mounted toms are 12",13",14" with a 16" floor tom.One fast way to tell the age is what does the badge look like? Is it black with S/L in brass this would be a 60''s set.If the badge in black and chrome its a 70's set..Mikey

Here is a picture of the badge and the set. It is a double mount, with a seperate mount for the third tom.

Probably built in early 1970 just before the transition black and silver Niles badge.

I agree with Kevins-that's a high serial # on a brass badge.Good luck finding a Lavender Satin bass drum.At least in this neck of the woods, that is an extremely uncommon wrap.

I thought they went to 250xxx with the copper/black Niles badge till the change in 1970? Reason I ask is the recent shells I picked up are 200428-200429-200497 and 203415. I was thinking timeline might have been 68-69 on these? I also thought my 13" with the 203415 might have been a add on being 3000 digits higher? Or someone dug deep into the badge bin. Not sure.

Edit to add.....mine have the Niles same badge as the ones in question.

Yep, '69 might be a closer date for 190xxx to 2000xxx badges, but the Avante Outfit doesn't appear in the '69 catalog, which is what gersch_uwec has. We don't have a '70 catalog in the Drum Guide, but the Avante appears in the '71 catalog. One would think that by '71 all the black and brass Niles badges would be surely be gone, so that leaves me with a '70 build date for gersch_uwec's Avante Outfit in my mind.

But yes, black and brass Niles badges do range up to 250xxx being discontinued in early '70 per Dr. Wenk's Badge article and serial numbering Guide in the Drum Guide.

This is assuming gersh posted the badge from the bass drum, hmmmmmmmm?

I have an "Avante" outfit in Red/Maroon sparkle and one of those darn "Pop" bass drums on a 20/12/13/14 kit in Silver Sparkle. Crazy to see the combination of "Pop" bass drum on "Avante" set up....with LAVENDER FLAME none the less! Must have been a custom order just like my crazy little guy.

Pretty frustrating that the bass drum isn't double headed. It would be almost impossible to find an "Avante" bass drum in LF! Nice one though!
