Quick & Easy (Hopefully)!

Are the knobs on the muffler assemblies used on 60s & 70s Slingerland Rack Toms and Floor Toms the same size?

THANKS in advance for your time and feedback!

JWG: Thanks for your input. I guess what may have confused me is that I've seen some listings for a Slingerland so-called "large knob" muffler. I was thinking that if there is a "large" one, there must also be a "small" one?Cooked Egg

There was. It was around a half inch. I have one on my Marching Snare. If you check out the Slingerland page on this forum, go to 1963 Gene Krupa kit and you will see the small muffs on the rack and floor. They are much smaller than the later ones.

hmmm, that is confusing. well perhaps there are some discrepancies and slingerland used some larger knobs on some outfits. To my knowledge my kit is all original as it came out of the niles factory doors, but maybe someone out there knows something you or I dont...

There were two basic types of muffs used during this time. They started with the smaller and went to the larger (fairly quickly). They still used the small stock on things like marching toms and snares and such. That's what I've found out through my research. The good Dr. would have the last word. Your kit would have had the larger, as that is what they were mounting by that time. The smaller muff is nice but difficult to get a good grip on. That may be why they enlarged it. Just a thought.

I think there was a change in the size around 1966 or '67. Might have been around the same time vent holes and badges were added to toms and the interiors of the shells were painted light tan?? I added a rack tom in '67 or '68 to a set I purchased new in '65. Original set had small knobs, clear maple interiors and no vent holes on the toms. Tom added in '67 had vent hole/Niles badge, large muffler knob and the painted interior.

APPRECIATE ALL THE FEEDBACK to date! I'm trying to utilize it to make sure that I pick up the correct mufflers for my floor tom and rack tom. Both the drums have the Slingerland Black & Silver badges with serial numbers 133768 and 126891, respectively. If I followed the email trail correctly, I should be looking for two LARGE knob mufflers, correct? An additional question if I may: Do both the small & large knob mufflers fit in the same factory-drilled holes in the tom shells? THANKS AGAIN!
