Slingerland denim question

Loading...

A friend of mine has an old Slingerland denim kit from mid-70s that he might sell. It's in pretty rough shape, pieces missing etc but the actual denim is ok. I know that they are quite rare but also maybe hard to sell? The sizes are 24, 18, 14, 13 (he also has a snare but wants to keep that one). The pieces missing are an 18" rim, two tone controls, three incorrect leg holders for the floor tom and a leg plus housing for the bassdrum.

1. Anyone know the price range, roughly?

2. See attached pictures. On the 14" tom there's a weird piece attached. Kinda looks like a buttplate for a snareholder but on the other side of the drum there's nothing. Anyone knows what it is?

Yes it's an incomplete butt plate.... The kit is a "Super Rock" kit, Model 51N, & mid 70's is correct. Probably will need to spend around at least 250.00 for the missing parts .. they each will show up from time to time.

Cheers

John

longjohn is correct about this being a Super Rock 51N outfit. While Denim kits are rare, that doesn't mean they are sought after and command high dollar value. Condition is everything! Denim sets that are complete, and without extra holes, missing parts and very good cosmetic condition will naturally sell for more. How much they sell for is tricky. I would say that a Denim kit would be more for display than to actually gig out.

As to the butt plate on the tom, I have no idea why someone would attach it to the tom shell! This butt plate was a carryover from Leedy, which Slingerland purchased. The Leedy butt was used on Artist snare drums and the COB Sound King snare drums.

$250 sounds about right to gather the missing parts. Do you know the condition of the shells? How are the edges? Are the shells 3-ply with reinforcing rings or the thicker 5-ply shells with no rings. We really need more pictures to show details.

I've downloaded thousands of drum pictures over the years and found this Denim kit that sold on eBay back in November, 2008. The condition was very good! The 4pc kit sold for $800. I've seen only a few other Denim kits over the years, but I deemed the condition not worthy of downloading the pictures! That, plus the asking prices were ridiculous. As such, they didn't sell!

Here's a 5.5x14 Artist snare drum, wrapped in Denim, that sold on eBay back in February, 2007. The selling price was $355. The drum is all original and in good condition. Because the snare drum is fairly rare, it would probably sell for more today!

I recall a denim kit on ebay hmm around 2012-2013. Asking price wasn't outrageous as I recall. Under $1,000 for certain. This wrap has always fascinated me. As well as the story behind it. Man, blue jeans in the 1970s were important. Reminds me of that catchy 70s hit "Jeans On". Was used for a recent tv commercial. Then there's Neil Diamond's 70s song "Forever in Blue Jeans". Elton John's line "Blue Jean Baby" from Tiny Dancer. Clapton's Bell Bottom Blues....Etc....

Group,,, "The Swingin' Blue Jeans" too..

Mid 70's, I remember there was a set in a Sydney Drum store display,

They had sat there for around 12 months... Up close they sure had collected a lot of dust on the fabric,,

Thanks for the reply, I'm waiting for my friends decision, if he wants to sell. I'm really more of a Ludwig guy but I have a Slingerland Copper kit from 73 and this might be my second, if the price is right!

Thanks for the info and pictures. The shells and edges actually seem pretty nice, good and solid kit. They are 3 ply with re-inforcement rings. Same as a Slingerland copper kit that I have. As for the butt plate on the tom - I'm asking myself the same - why...?! And sorry, I don't have more pictures at the moment but the drums are in my rehearsalroom so I can take some pictures next time I get there. Probably later this week.
