Well, I hate to disagree, but the Yamaha's will not go for 250. They are always higher than any of the MIJ stuff. As for the Star shells, The rail does not mean the shells are always 3 ply, which IMO are much nicer sounding. But that wrap, in those years, again they will not go that cheap. Sorry, but I can tell you for sure the Yamaha's are always going to bring more money than the Stars. Now, if you like the sound of the thicker shells, good for you, I happen to like the thinner shells, as they are much lower tone, or pitch. They sound more boomy. Like a drum is supposed to sound. BOOM. and resonates for much longer. Just my own personal taste. And if they are the thinner shells, they will be worth more because they are older, there are fewer of them left because the shells are thinner and many youngsters crushed them, not realizing they are so thin. That is why they switched, I suppose.

I love the Star drums, however they will never be worth as much to anyone when compared to Yamaha. Yamaha is more closely associated with Professional gear, whereas the Star is associated with beginners Please don't take this as arguement, but these are facts. Look at the ebay sales of a Star set, versus a Yamaha set of the same year, the Yammie will be sold for 200-500 more. I do wish you good luck! Don't embarrass yourself by lowballing the seller, he likely will hang up and not listen to a second call.

Hello!

Meanwhile I could speak with the owner of the shop that sells the two sets. A very friendly man.

I´ve been asking him about the condition of his beauties, and he told me that everything seems to be OK so far, except the wrap of the 16" Yamaha, which had cracksHmmmm

The Star set is a later one, it has the thick shells (same as my Bollero).

When I asked him for a price for both, he said he would knock off 280,- Euros because of the cracks on that Yamaha.

That would mean 700,- Euros (~860,- US-Dollars) for all. And this price would even include the shipping costs!

Maybe on Saturday I will have a look at them to get an idea of that destroyed wrap and if the Yammies are worth 350,- Eus.

I think he perhaps should go down with the price a little more so we could close a bargain. Depends on the severity of the damage, of course.

Really not bad. These old wraps do crack. And I would bet it is around the area of one of the leg brackets. I just dab some glue on them to hold them down so they don't get worse. 350, that's about 500USD, so that is about right, even with some minor cracking on the shells. Now, as for the Star, 350 is a tad high for most wraps, however that one, eh...maybe it is abput where it should be. Try ot see tham, and if you have cash in hand, make him the offer and see if he will let you walk away, or take the money. I would prefer to have the Marc in hand, rather than wait for another looker to see if I could get a little more...maybe drop the Star another 50E...can't hurt.

Hello!

In spite of the fact that I placed a bid for an early KingBeat Snare with parallel strainer that will make me win the auction, I decided to leave the Star set alone.

I already got a Star kit with the thicker shells, and mine has an even more uncommon wrap, so I think.

I rang up the shop once more this afternoon to let the seller know that I´m only interested in the Yamaha further on. Regarding the price he said that he remembered he had bought this kit for low money together with a Supraphonic and a very nice cymbal, but he sold it and the snare as well meanwhile.

So he´d knock off maybe another 50,- Euros ´cause there are just the 20", 13", !6" drums left - which would mean 300,- Euros (~370,- US-Dollars) for them, including the tom holder:D.

Next week I will go on excursion to have a look at it. I´ll try to make it mine for 250,- or 280,- Euros because of the damaged wrap on the 16". We´ll see.

Greets, Jürgen

That is a great thing. those old Yammies are just great drums. If you want to know what early ones sell for here, this is a good one to watch. Even a little crack in the wrap is not as bad as it seems. Many people try to make a big thing but a little glue, or epoxy, will stop the wrap from getting worse. I mean you have to look at it this way. Too many people say leave it. If left, it will get worse. If you stop the cracking, it will not get worse. This is like a badly seperating shell. The drum is not playable, and yet some say no, don't use XXX product to try to fix it...I mean...if it is unusable, it is unusable. You want to play that drum again, you use what is neccesary to make it usable, period. So if using epoxy makes the drum playable, or keeps the wrap from further damge, so be it.

Hi jonni!

Many thanks for your advice!

Yes, I have seen this link in another thread also, but there´s a difference between the blue kit at ebay and the orange kit here in Germany: The one here seems to be more like a beginner´s series drum set than one of a professional line like the blue set.

The bassdrum just has six lugs (that´s the fact that makes me suppose it´s a beginner set) on the one I will have a look at. For me, in the end, it will depend on how bad the wrap is broken - and especially the sound of the drums. And also on the price, of course.

So I will spend enough time checkin´it and testing it next saturday, not to make a decision in a hurry that I probably regret afterwards.

So long!

Looking at the picture, the bass having 6 lugs doesn't indicate to me that this is any less cool of a set. If that was for sale around here at that price it would be a slam dunk. I'm surprised it hasn't sold in your area already, given the values of drums over there. Yamaha probably considered the functionality of having 6 lugs on the bass, and given the metal hoops it probably tunes up very easily. I love the color. Sorta depends on the extent of damage to the ft wrap but I'm digging it as shown!

Hi!

Indeed. It seems as if this kit has been offered for sale for almost one year now.

And also the Star set. As Ralf told me, he had seen it last year already, offered as a complete set at that time - including a snare as well.

In spite of this, I hope to make a good bargain with the dealer. As jonnistix wrote some posts ago, might be better for him to have 250,- or so cash than having the Yamaha catching dust for another year (or more?)!Excited

Watch a few episodes of Pawn Stars.....That guy knows how to deal.

If you want to pay 250, offer 200 then have him pry that last fifty out of your clenched fist. Advantage you. It hasn't sold in a year or longer. Don't forfeit the advantage by offering anything but a low offer. Just my humble opinion on the matter.

have a wonderful evening
