Shelly Manne's Ride 1962 TV Broadcast

Here are some shots of Shelly Manne's main ride from the 1962 television broadcast of Jazz Scene USA. Is there any doubt that this is an older A? I would guess 40's. You don't see a bell popping out like that on very many modern rides. Also seems to have that Trans Stamp sheen to it.

I have a trans stamp 21" that looks s lot like his. Very cool.

I don't know what it is. Any one know for sure? It just has a TS sheen but I assume it's older.

That's a pre-war old stamp. That would be the trademark era immediately preceding the first transitional stamp. Early to mid 1940's.

Was he still with Gretsch, then. If so, wouldn't he have used K's (not that he had to)?

If he did, then these could possibly be type I old stamps, which looked virtually identical in design to what Avedis was making during this same era; namely the pre-war old stamps. Both the A and K sides at this time were using the same overall cymbal design; which consisted of these dinky little 3-1/2" bells on top of some fairly flat profile cymbals.

I thought he played A's too but I could be wrong. Thanks Bill. Don't think I've ever seen one of that era. I would assume there are very few around.
