shell design

Hi Folks,

I want to share the following with you:

Lately I've been fooling around with an idea I had for a long time. This is the first try-out. I've been wanting to make a (more or less) solid shell that is rigid but also extremely light and thin. After a lot of googling I came across video's about guitarbuilding. I kind of transferred the principle of the construction to a drum shell. In this case I build it out of 4 hot-pipe-bended pieces of oak (why not 1 piece: I wanted to use wood that I allready had and it was this maximum size).

The rings inside are from triplex (later I'll build them from segmented solid wood). The rings are not parallel to the shell as in the normal use of the re-ring, but perpendicular to the shell. This way a lighter and thinner ring can be used.

In the mean time I bought some old very wide and long boards of (real) mohagony and oak, so that will make next trys of this design al ot simpler.

But first I'll finish this drum and see how it sounds. I'm very curious if this design gives a decent sound.

It would be an interesting sound experiment to play a single ply maple shell alongside your design to see if you can hear a difference.

Love your designs. I'd like to play a couple of them just to hear them in-person.

Too many great drums to list here!

Very interesting project. You'll have to keep us updated. The wide, flat rering projecting into the shell's interior is really innovative and may contribute greatly to resonance, or you may simply discover why nobody else is doing it.

Keep us posted.

What kind of worries me is that the shell has little sound and volume when tapped with a knuckle.

But I let the worries go and simply finish the drum and see what happens.

Apart from the results this project allready brought me a lot:

I learned how to hot-pipe-bend, which is quite a tricky job, and I found a way to glue two very thin boards on top of each other. So, if I choose to skip the rings as they are now and use "normal" re-rings, I have what it takes to make all sizes of drums, so I can make my own solid ply kit!

I'm also building an oak stave shell in the same size and I'm planning on mounting the exact same hardware and make comparible edges en snare beds. That would be a true experiment, because only the shells are different.

Update:

I've tested it. Sounds great! Haven't tested the tuning range yet. Now it's tuned mid-range. It sounds better with the reso head not too high. I'd describe the sound as woody. It sounds quite dry, I expected it to be sound more resonant, but it doesn't. It's also louder than expected. The shell is only 3 mm thick, but it's as loud as any wooden 14" snare I have.

And.... it's extremely sensitive. Good for jazz and brush-work I guess.
