Thanx guys, more of this design to come. Next I'll make a similar shell, but use one 5 inch wide board of mahogony and segmented mahogony rings. I'm thinking of fully perefectting this design and then make a small production line of 5 drums or so and try to sell them.

Great innovative work... Brilliant... Congratulations...

In your future developments... Have you considered any experimentation along the lines of.. the wooden ring doubling as a "Tone Flange".. Would be an interesting subject too,,,

Cheers

John

Very impressive! I'm intrigued about the hot pipe bending method though. How do you do it?

Can't wait to see more. You are the Master Craftsman!

@longjohn, interesting idea. For this drum I allready considered drilling holes in the rings to make them even lighter and to let more air flow between the heads. I googled tone flange. Waht are they supposed to do to the sound?

@R.Adam. Thanx, but I am not a master. When it comes to bending, I'm an absolute beginner. This drum has many imperfections up close. Doesn't bother me, I'm not a perfectionist when I build for myself. It will take a couple of more drum to be able to say I masterd it, and be able to make drum good enough for "the market"

With hot pipe bending you use a propane burner to heat a metal pipe. You rub (constantly to not get burn marks) a board of wood on to the pipe until it is so hot you can bend it. Loads of vids about it on you tube. Only works with thin boards.

Your threads inspire me to start building snares as well. An idea I had tossed about, but I think I may give it a whack. Can't wait to see how this snare comes out.

Spectacular looking drum! Have you ever thought of experimenting with heated pressure molds? Like the ones they use at Ludwig and DW?

John

Too many great drums to list here!

@purdie shiffle: no, that's not the route a want to be on. I'm looking for the biggest possible simplicity. A drum I could make with just a handfull of simple tools. Making heated pressure molds is way too complex, and leads to ply shells, that I'm not interested in (I mean not in making them).
