Hi Dave!...
Well... as always, all we really have to go on are the examples that we have seen/owned, and like everything else!, there are going to be exceptions! Having said THAT...
There are THREE different styles of oval Dynasonic badges. I have owned ALL THREE at different times... and currently, I have TWO of the three on my four Dynasonics. I did have the 2nd type Dynasonic badge on a Red Sparkle Dynasonic, but I sold that drum to a collector out in CA. Anyway,
The badge on your BDP Dynasonic is the FIRST style of oval badge. Notice how it's more of a football shape than oval? As the years went by, the badge became more "rounded", with the 2nd type being the most round if you will. The most common badge is the third style that just about everybody has on their Dynasonic's today, kind of a cross between the two. So,
The reason I mentioned the shape being more common to the COB is that they were the first to have this badge while the wood models were still using the paper labels with Dynasonic typed in. The more common of the badges on the wood Dynasonics are the 2nd style, which as I mentioned is more rounded than football, but still oval of course. This doesn't mean that the first style badge wouldn't be on a wood Dynasonic... I'm sure they were! Just not as many. Is it possible that this badge was added to this drum with a damaged COB Dynasonic being the donor? Which brings us back here:
The badge on your drum is most certainly correct for that year Dynasonic... and the fact that the drum also has the label could be just one of those instances were things cross as the "new" is ushered in, and the "old" is escorted out. But...
The air vent grommet has certainly been tampered with on your drum, leading us to think that POSSIBLY that badge could have been installed after the fact... or ... perhaps the drum might even be a re-wrap... we really don't know. Or, it could be as it was originally made too... although there are an awful lot of marks around that grommet, which tells me that this badge was off this drum at some point for whatever reason. Still,
It is a nice example of an earlier wood Dynasonic, and we don't get to see all that many three ply Dynasonics anymore, although I'm sure they are out there!
