Rogers snare - Worth it?

Loading...

Hello folks - I came across a snare the other day and I was hoping some of the Rogers experts here could help me determine if it's a good buy or not.

Here's the data: 8 lug WMP Cleveland Luxor model with beavertail lugs, chrome sta-tite strainer, dull gray painted interior, script logo, stick-chopper hoops with clips, non-original snare wires.

Here's the condition: Wrap is excellent with no major flaws, lifting, scratches, etc... WMP has faded to a minty green color (subtle). Lugs are also excellent (no cracks, etc...) with very good chrome. Strainer is functioning fine with some pitting. Shell interior looks excellent as do the bearing edges.

So, is this drum worth $200.00 or should I pass?

Thanks for any help on this one.

Are you sure it has 8 lugs and not 6?

The Luxor was a 6 lug snare and with clips it would be an old one 58 to 62 and should have an eagle badge. In good condition it would surely be worth $200.

mlvibes - Yes, I'm sure it has 8 lugs, which puzzled me as well. I thought all Luxor/student model snares were 6 lug. The other puzzling thing was the stick choppers with clips.

musicbybj - As I said, it's an 8 lugger with a Luxor paper tag inside. No eagle badge - Script logo Rogers.

So what's up... is it a franken-snare or a rare 8 lug luxor?

And what about the dull gray interior? Was that standard on Luxors or did Rogers never use a dull gray color? My buddies Holiday kit has a gray speckled paint, far as I know.

Thanks again for the info. Anything else?

Luxor crossed out, Powertone or Tower or Holiday written in? With a statight I would expect Tower.

Ploughman - Nope. Luxor on the paper tag, nothing crossed out. I had the drum in my hands and I looked it over quite well.

It looked all original.

Seriously?

What's the deal with the hoops? Didn't pretty much all the american drum makers abandon them well before 1960?

I'm just trying to work all this out and avoid buying someone's "parts bin" drum. Beavertail lugs with stick choppers doesn't seem to make any sense, right?

Have all the Rogers guys chimed in yet??

This drum is another Rogers puzzle. To the best of my knowledge Rogers never made an eight lug Luxor. Now, they were known to be a little careless with lables at Rogers. If one guy ran out of lables he would just grab some out of another guys box and use them until he got more.

As best as I can tell they were still using Stick choppers (double flanged rims) until 1960 and these were on the early Luxor (6 lug) and were on B&B lugs. To my knowledge clips were never used on beavertail lugs.

Speckled paint came in the Fullerton era.

This sounds like a Tower snare with the wrong lable and someone put the double flanged rims on it.

Another Rogers mystery.

Thanks Jack - A mystery it is!

So a Tower snare, even with the single flange hoops is probably worth the $200.00.

Judging from what I saw at drumfarm.com, the tower model snares start at $600.00. Heck, the cheapest Luxor was $245.00 and that had extra holes drilled.

I'm thinking I might have to buy it - Just on principal :)
