Rogers Holiday Drums

Would it be worth spending the money to get these fixed up or at the very least, getting the rubber feet and the missing parts to the base drum? Would doing this increase the value of the drums over more then the cost of the repair?

Is there a parts listing/guide, I need to find the proper names for what I need and to figure out what I need.

Thanks

Man, those are nice. Wish I was given those to learn on when I was young. The easiest thing you could do for them is get them cleaned up (search a little on here and you'lll find volumes on cleaning techniques). The front parts to the bass drum are missing, so it'd be nice to have those, but parts start to add up very very quickly. Scouring ebay and other venues may be a lot of headache.

Hey Scott!...

If the sale of the drums is what you are intending, again... the Dynasonic is the piece that's going to bring the cash in this case. The other four drums, even if they were completed/detailed, will add very little to what the Dynasonic will bring. Tillerva is correct in stating that hunting up all the missing parts... purchasing them... cleaning and installing... would indeed be a slightly daunting task, especially as you haven't ever been through it before and would be starting new. With that said,

You could go a couple different ways here: Sell the Dynasonic on it's own... ( it does appear to be complete and pretty nice even in it's present state, although more detailed pics would be wanted by any potentially serious buyer ) ... and use some of the cash from the sale to purchase the missing parts needed to complete the other drums... then sell those and recoup the difference... or,

Sell the set AS IS currently, with again the Dynasonic being the bread winner here, and the rest of the set along for the ride, and let the new owner have the task of putting everything back in shape, which a lot of guys would enjoy doing truth be told. I'm not totally convinced that you would eek out all that much more for the rest of the set anyway... the Dynasonic is THE desirable piece here, and will supply most all the go juice so to speak!

Hi All,

I met up with Scott after seeing the this kit advertised locally.

The snare is a beauty all right and all original! After thorough inspection, I was able to take the kit home for restoration. Check out the inside of the Dyna Sonic! Gorgeous laquer that has aged perfectly..

Scott was astute enough to do some research on a "hunch" that his drums were more than dust collectors and landed on this site where knowledge, love of fine drums and comraderie dominate...

Well done Scott (whose young family will have a nice Christmas :Santa: and to those who advised him on his little "gold mine", so the WMP Dyna didn't end up being given away.

Yes, Kelly bought this set as I have been helping him with info on them, and specifically the wood Dynasonic. ( which for the record is all there and in near pristine condition... truly THE piece out of the whole set without a doubt ) Regarding the DUAL SINGLE Swivo-Matic tom mounts on the bass drum:

The second mount for the right tom was added afterwards, and most certainly by one of the owners of this set. Rogers had their #366 Swivo-Matic Dual Tom Holder available and would have mounted that one on the bass drum at the factory if this were an original 5 piece set. I believe that the 2nd tom/mount was added after the fact, especially because there was already a SINGLE Swivo tom mount in place. I have seen this before, and usually almost always owner installed. Interestingly, he could use a Rogers #325 hex Extension Cymbal Arm with that mount for his ride cymbal as there just might be enough room for a 20" ride with the present location of that mount... or ... use it as is for the two toms... it's all good!

Very nice set... especially with that wood Dynasonic!

Hey TommyP and all,

tommy, you are a Rogers expert, no doubt about it! Thanks for all your help.

Let the sleuthing begin...

1) FYI, all the tags are Cleveland, except the 13" tom (Dayton) .

So, does this means that the 13" tom as well as the xtra tom holder were added in the Dayton era?

2) Did the Dyna come along with the kit as the wrap matches (WMP) and the serial number #9144 indicates Cleveland era? However, the strainer has a small "D" stamped in it...Does this indicate Dayton, in which case the snare was added to the kit later too, perhaps at the same time as the 13" tom??

CSI time guys...

3) I checked some earlier "Dave Clark Five" photos. This band had a Rogers Holiday kit with double toms mounted on two separate swivo tom holders (Like the bass I just bought)instead of a single swivo holder from the factory. so, Did the drum tech with the band add the additional holder or was it a custom order?

BTW, I purchased the kit with original Zildjian cymbals at what is considered a fair price in a soft market.

Cheers!

Kelly

Like so many things of this nature, there is no way to REALLY know unless the party that made the modification could actually be asked... and that would include Dave Clark! That said:

Rogers had a DUAL TOM Swivo holder as early as 1962... Dave Clark wasn't even an endorser until '65 with his signature set not even being cataloged until 1967... ( according to the Rogers list of endorsee's ) ... so the fact that the picture you saw had two SINGLE Swivo mounts like yours still leads me to believe that they were done after the fact, as Rogers would have used their double tom holder if it were factory issue... why wouldn't they otherwise?! That's my take on it anyway... and as I mentioned, I have seen more than a few of these set ups over the years and almost always, they were installed privately by the owner who was looking to "update" their set to double toms. But hey... I guess we'll never really know!

Regarding the serial/year on the Dynasonic: I thought the snare drum might have come with the set originally. The tags for the toms/bass are very close in year to the Dynasonic, as I believe I mentioned in Scotts thread. But you know... again ... who really knows! Although I do think that this was originally a "set" with the extra tom/mount added later.

DOH!!!... I also forgot to mention this: Dave Clark played ENGLISH Rogers drums... not the American manufactured models... at least at first as a lot of pictures attest. This is important because the English Rogers had differences from the American Rogers, and this included the Swivo designed hardware which were made under license in the UK. Interestingly, the English Rogers hardware was NOT compatible with the American made Rogers hardware, and most probably didn't have the dual Swivo tom holder.

Thanks Tommy!

All that makes sense. Would be nice to go back in time and witness some of these things happening or maybe not?

Funny thing.. Ringo switched to swivo hardware but never added an extra tom holder. Wasn't his style?

I have a 15" Dayton Powertone WMP marching snare (pic later) that may double as a floor tom. Has the same fade as this kit and would not be out of place, except the depth.
