Rewrap Indicators (need help)

Deano, that should be a Down Beat...although the 12 does appear to be mis-matched. I like the color, although it could be argued this is a put together as well....see, there is too much conjecture. If the price is right, why worry? as long as all drums are ply matched, they should sound great, regardless of matching wrap. If the 12 is from a different kit, you still have a Down Beat plus a 13. So, get it close and see for yourself. If the seller is truly an original good doer, then he will accept a return, if you find it is not exactly what you want. Or, you could still sell re-sell it to someone else who is looking more for a great player than an exact matching set. The badges, or rather serial #s, will be more an indicator than anything else. If they are 3 years apart in sequence, then you know it is a put together. If, on the other hand they are close, within say an 18 month period, you likely ave a factory matched kit with an add-on. And as Tom states, Ludwig did not do the double tom mount on the weenie, only Star did that, at least during this era.

I wish you good luck with it, as this is a nice looking blue sparkle kit!

Hi Jonnistix,

From the serial numbers provided I believe this is a matched set. I will wait for the interior photo's first before I pull the trigger. I too am partial to that blue sparkle wrap. These drums are in pretty good shape with no extra holes and it has some of the original hardware and cymbals. If all goes well I will have them picked up next week.

From Deano

Just received some more photo's from the seller. It looks to me like the wrap is original. Any thoughts?

Ok, After looking at the photos i will gie you what i think and why.To me it looks to be a RE_wrapped set..Why photo #1 look around the air grommet it looks to be replaced should be Brass--photo #2 seam looks in the right place..photo #3 the blue over-lap looks not to be all the way under the wood look at the seam or edge of the wrap blue should go all the way under the seam also in photo#3 the drum has been RE-edge and in not Original...So i guess it comes down to the asking price i myself would not pay more than 600.00 for the drums...Mikey

Yup, its a re-wrap.....look at the last pic where the wrap seem is. Notice the ink mark on the bearing edge as well as the pencil line where a very small piece of the wrap is broken off and missing?

It appears to be a decent job though.

As far as the tom mount comments above.....true they didn't make a double tom mount like that, however......it is a rail type mount and it was common practice to add another holder to the rail back in the day when you wanted to expand your set. While not catalog correct, it sure is better than breaking out the hole saw and drilling for the "correct" double tom mount. Kudos to the guy who went this route instead of drilling a huge hole!

The 13" tom appears to be a 6-ply tom from the Monroe era......while the finish matches, I'm sure that tone-wise it will overpower the other drums as the shell construction is different. It will sound more full and just plain louder than the rest of the drums, which are 3-ply. 3-ply Ludwigs are more mid-rangey sounding, whereas 6-ply are more full sounding. Not a good sonic match to my ears.....

I'd pass on them for the asking price. Now, if you can talk the guy down on his price, I'd grab them. But for the asking price, I'd walk away.

A big thanks to all of you for your help. Thank god I didn't just run out and buy these without conferring with the experts here first. I was tempted as it is a downbeat. Anyhow, I sent an email back to the seller advising him of the rewrap and how it devalues a kit. I'm waiting to hear back.

You guys rock!
