Rewrap Indicators (need help)

Hi guys,

I am somewhat new to restoring vintage drums and was wondering what the indicators of a rewrap are. What would I look for if I had a suspicion a drum had been rewrapped?

As always thank you ever so much for any information.

Hi Vintagemore2000,

As requested I have attached a couple of photo's. I'm trying to determine if the tom at the top of the stack has been re wrapped as the color looks a bit darker (could be lighting). They aren't the best photo's, but it's all I have right now.

Thanks

An obvious one would be any holes or repaired holes on the inside of the shell that are not holes in the wrap.

You could also pull a lug from all of the drums and see if the one you have a question on matches the fading.

Thanks Drumhack,

I would check this myself, but I will be buying them and having them shipped. The seller has had them for 10+ yrs and has not tampered with it at all. I was looking for signs he could look for to ascertain if the wrap is original.

Hey Deano;

A couple of things I noticed playing "spot the difference".

1. The lugs are smaller on the tom at the top of the pile.

2. The tom on top of the pile has an internal muffler. The other two toms don't.

3. The tom in the middle of the pile has 2 badges. One on the left of the tom mount, another on the right. The one on the right looks smaller than the one on the left.

Since the pics are from 4 different angles I doubt the colour difference has to do with the lighting but I could be wrong about that.

I am guessing that the tom on the top of the pile is of a different era / line than the rest of the drums. I'm not a ludwig guy but that is what I noticed from the pics.

On the set you posted..This is what i think the set started out as a 4 piece why the 12" tom the one with the small lugs on top of the photo and the 14x14 floor tom and bass drum, snare came as a set..The 13" tom the one in the middle of the three tom photo is a added on tom to the set..Another reason why i think this is Ludwig never had a "L" arm cymbal mount on the side of the bass drum with a 5 piece set...By the photos you posted set does not look like a re-wrapped set one why to tell for sure on mid 60's Ludwig's remove one head from one of the toms you should see the wrap going into the shell were the over lap is...Ludwig made the drums with the finish on the outer ply of the shell before they made the drum round....Mikey

Mikey777 you are right. According to the seller the middle tom was an add on. Further photo's show the muffler on the floor tom. The snare tom, floor tom and bass all have the small keystone badges and the serial numbers are all pretty close. I have spoken with the seller who said that the color of the top tom is consistent with the bass and floor tom ( may be lighting). I will have him take the head off to check the wrap inside.

Thanks for the help.

There is no such thing as a Ludwig double mount like the one pictured. Two arms on one bass drum bracket is an MIJ trick, not Ludwig. As long as you know the 13" is an add on from the outset, you are OK.

If you look at the very bottom of the 12",the light is shining on the drum right above the rim,and looks identical to the bass and floor tom.But all the pictures,at different angles, make the 12"look darker,at least on the back side of the drum. This is odd....Why does the add on seem to match better than the original mounted tom?You are right to question a rewrap,or maybe inconsistant sun bleaching?

My thoughts exactly,

The seller said the wrap looks the some color to him. Anyway I asked that he take the heads off of all the drums and take photo's for me. Hopefully, I can make a determination that way. Buying drums without being able to handle them yourself is a real bummer.
