Restore of Pioneer Bass Drum

Loading...

Here is my drum with the new fiberskyns and hardware. I did the best I could with the hardware. Maybe take another crack at it in 40 some years which is what it took me to get this far.:)

I don't have the heart to cut down the old drum head and mount it. My drum teacher says I should frame it and hang it up. The jury is still out on this one.

Now I have to figure out how to tune a single tension drum. It seems pretty high pitched for a bass drum where I have it now to allow for some rebound on the drum hear.

Here are 2 photos of the drum head and you can see the damage. Not to mention it was shot with a bb gun when my son was young. I did not know that until I pulled it out from under the stairs and I heard something rolling around inside.

I forget to attach the photos of the drum to my other post. Here they are.

I agree it looks great! Keeping the original head as a separate piece is better I think - the new one's nice and clean. For tuning I go up and then back down until just before I get that papery sound, some buckling in the head is okay as long as it's not making that sound when being struck by the actual batter.

If you get to feeling like that new head looks too clean, a little strong tea on a rag will mellow it out. Apply unevenly/spatter/stains, and or use coffee for some real aging...

Thanks. I think the drum is sounding better by just adjusting to the climate in my basement. I noticed that with my super classis as well.

Drum looks great... good to have.. ( and yes, amazing just what 43 years of restoration can do ) ;)

Cheers
