Restoration:Sonor Tear Drop Drum Kit

Loading...

A friend game me this drum kit. After reading and looking at several pics on this site, I believe it is a Sonor Tear Drop kit. It's in bad shape but I would love to restore it with as many original parts as possible. (Good Luck..I'm told) All of the lugs are in good shape but it's missing some hoops and quite a few tension rods. The cymbal, tom mounts, and mounting arm is missing as well. I was told they take metric heads (That explains it). I measured in inches and noticed it was slightly off. Anyone have any advice or suggestions or information, please share them with me. I have feeling I'm going to need all of the help I can get to make this project a success.

Welcome aboard !i

Forum menber Henk doesn`t stop by this site too much, but he`s always on the sonormuseum.com site, He`s a teardrop collector with many of them, If you go to the other site, in the fix it section, you can put your pics. up there and ask him. It wont hurt to try, he has a fleet of drop stands, HH, pedals and he may have drum trim for sale. He is however in the Netherlands !i

You have in your possession a late 1960's Sonor Kit made with 6-ply beech wood shells. The shells have no top and bottom reinforcement hoops, are quite strong, and have rounded factory made bearing edges. It will take standard size heads. Some heads may overhang the outer shell edges a little but it's of no importance. Just judging from the photo my guess is that you need 20" bass drum heads, 13" and 16" tom tom heads, and 14" snare heads. The kit appears to be in quite decent overall condition. Have patience and take the time to acquire the missing parts. Throw in some some elbow grease, some extra care and attention, and you'll have a totally cool drumkit which sounds great. You can probably round up all the mounts, hoops, tension rods, and other stuff for a couple of hundred dollars by asking here on this forum and browsing on eBay. Beautiful kit - Best of luck with them!

I did notice that your badges have the mallet logo shaft go all the way to the edge of the badge. It`s like silk screened on with no imprint, this is a recent discovery and we`re try`n to nail down that year of production. I`ve only seen three of them on toms, your`s is the first complete kit I`ve seen,..let me get back to ya on that !i

All of the badges are identical to the Bass Drum Badge. They are imprinted (slight indentation) but not deeply engraved. It has the numbers 711 stamped inside the shell behind the badges.

I have several 60's Sonor tom mount brackets -- the ones that the arms fit into. The hole on your bass drum looks similar to one that would fit these brackets, but the extension slot from the round hole looks to be a llittle narrower. The measurements for my bracket are from mounting bolt hole to mounting bold hole 3 1/4" -- tube outside diameter 1" -- tube extension 3/4" x 1 1/2". The tom arm hole is 3/4" diameter. These brackets are complete with plastic insert and Sonor thumbscrews (which are unusual with a slot for tightening with a screw driver in case you need more leverage than the thumbscrew provides). If the measurements are right, and you are interested, I will send you photos. Don
