refinishing question

Loading...

Hey all,

I have an older set that I will be refinishing soon. It's a Mapex Mars Pro and is Maple/Mahogany/Maple plies. I want to strip of the old dark purple lacquer finish and redo them in a turquoise strata finish which has a black base coat.

What is the best thing to use to strip off the old lacquer finish?

Also, do I necessarily need to strip it all the way to wood?

Since the base coat of the new finish is black, can't I just leave the old purple paint (or whatever it is) on the drum and just lightly sand and paint over it? Or would that be too much and choke the drum resonance?

From what I understand (which isn't much) the resonance is based on the inside of the drum regardless of what is on the outside, basically.

I hope this all makes sense.

i would use a stain that you get in every hardware store! I did this once, and i took away all the paint down to the wood. Wich goes quite eays with a good stain and a scraper!

I would go for as clean as possible, you will be more happy with your finishing result!

Good luck;-)

And welcome to the VDF:-)

Get some Circa1850 stripper. Works great, doesn't raise grain or damage wood or glue. Follow directions on can.

You could leave the old finish there and just sand and apply over but you will get a very thick finish coat. Not optimal. Usually better to strip to wood.

Thank you for the reply.

So I would use a stain to strip off the old lacquer and paint?

Not a stain. Stain is a finish,

You need a good quality furniture stripper like the one I mentioned above.

Just be sure you follow the direction on the can, especially the part about neutralizing the stripper when your done.

Thanks for the replys. I agree that going all the way down to the wood would be the best scenario, but was asking because I didn't want to do a lot of work for nothing in case I didn't really need to go all the way to bare wood. Now that I have someone else's opinion, I will do just that.

So after I get them stripped, do I need to apply anything to the shells to help adhesion of the paint or just lightly sand to remove any residue left by the stripping chemical?

follow instructions on can.

They usually recommend paint thinner and a bit of fine steel wool to remove residue in grain of wood.

Very important to remove all stripper or you may have adhesion probs with new coat.

Look, the stain is already in the wood. Use the color stain over the purple, once you get the top coat of lacquer/poly/wtf eva...the just re-stain the purple to black, and pray you get just a hint of the purple to shine through in the black and add just a hint of maybe silver or copper glitter to the mix of the top coat of LACQUER
