Re-wrapping 9/72 Londoner

Loading...

I'm seriusly considering re-wrapping my Londoner. Found a place on Ebay who sells a good wrap ( or so they say the 100% rating reviews)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/WHITE-MARINE-PEARL-DRUM-WRAP-PEARLOID-GLITTER-GUITAR-PICKGUARD-SHEET-/281873523103?hash=item41a0f8a19f:g:RNAAAOSwbdpWXx8E

Any one has experience with this seller ?

Is a Translucent wrap ok or not ?

Picture is missing my Dyna and the 16" FT

Rewrapping will seriously de-value the set...If value isn`t important to you, then so be it...I would leave the wrap as is if it were my set...

Cheers

I might consider buying that wrap if it truly is the "same type of quality that other drum wrap companies sell for $100 a sheet," but not for a vintage Rogers kit...unless perhaps the original wrap is a lost cause. I love WMP, and I'd consider wrapping a lesser-valued kit in it, but man...I wouldn't touch that black Rogers.

Very good seller! I bought 3 sheets of that WMP wrap a few years ago from him. Think they are a Uncle/Nephew team that sell that and a few other colors.

The wrap itself was made in China and is somewhat translucent. So parts of the shell can and will show through. It's a praline (sp?) wrap and flammable. Like the old stuff used years ago. There is no protective peel off layer like many new wraps have. Also hard to tell on the WMP what side is the face. Small chip pattern. Mine is going on a old Radio King shell tinted to match yellowed/aged WMP. So being translucent it's exactly what I needed.

EDIT to add....Added a few pictures of the different wraps they sold. You can see transparent parts on each. Also the ebay seller will send a few samples if you ask him. These were sent to me quickly. Good guy! Nice thing with the WMP it's a small chip pattern and matches some Rogers patterns well.

Thank you for the replay guys.

Each of you added a degree of why and whynot....

Why WMP? I dreamed of a set like that ( WMP) since I was a kid looking into the window of a Music Store in Italy in the early 70's

Although the actual wrap is in decent shape it has never appealed to me, plus is not a Collection item rather a player kit.

I never removed a wrap from a Rogers so I do not know what to expect. However I did remove a wrap from a 74 Ludwig ( black Cortex) and I tell you it is a biatch.

I will try to post a bigger picture.

Anyway thanks much for your input. If I pull the plug and do it I will place pic in here.

Wow! They look great. If you really want WMP that much, I'd sell them, and buy a set.Having rewrapped a mis matching Rogers floor tom, the wrap *will not* be fun to remove and clean up glue residuals, etc. Even if you have to add bit to what you sell these for, figure in the cost of new wrap and glue. MUCH labor. And, they will never be as well wrapped as they are now. I gotta say tho, I really like the classic solid black look. Particularly in either Rogers, or Gretsch sets. Just classy and understated.

Micro,

DOH Arrrgh! That original Ebony wrap looks way, way, too pristine to strip it off and replace it with that translucent WMP. WMP and solid black are two of my favorite finishes for Rogers drums (black is just so classy like a grand piano and WMP just oozes a vintage vibe). I wouldn't remove that perfectly fine Ebony wrap just to change the look of the set (even if it is just a player's kit).

How about picking up some bare orphan shells and re-wrapping those in WMP? Then switch all the hardware out and keep those beautiful Ebony shells intact. I've stripped unsalvageable wrap off Rogers shells, and all I have to say is prepare yourself and have a good heat gun ready. Rogers wrap does not want to leave the shell willingly.

So if you want to go the route of orphan shells, PM me. I have spare Fullerton 12", 13" 16"FT and 24"bass shells just sitting around waiting for a purposeful life. I'll even trade you my Cleveland WMP 22" bass shell for your Fullerton 22" Ebony shell just to prevent the tragic disfigurement....

Let us know what you decide, and post pics if you end up re-wrapping.

Mike

I agree with the others here, that kit is in beautiful shape and would be a shame to devalue it, players kit or not. And like you, I'm not even a big fan of solid black wrap. I'd be on the lookout for a WMP Rogers set for sale, or (more realistically, for me at least) a Rogers project kit that's in ok shape or has cosmetic issues that would greatly benefit from a rewrap.
