"Fake" vintage drums?

Loading...

No dyna from the factory would have beds like that. But that doesn't mean it's a fake...someone may have added the snare beds because they didn't want to use the frame system, and you kind of need beds with a traditional setup.

According to Ben Strauss in the Rogers Book, the dyna did have snare beds, but they were so imperceptible that it looks like there are none.

Quoting Ben Strauss, "...The snare bed is barely perceptible...We reasoned that you did in fact need some degree of snare bed to allow the head to vibrate down and touch the snares. We used such a shallow, and gradually tapered, snare bed that you couldn't even really see it. When Joe Thompson was done with his design work on this he ended up with a snare bed that was only .004" deep." From Rob Cook's "The Rogers Book"

Correction or addendum, please!

The maple Dynasonics were reintroduced in 1982 until 1983 as XP10 models with no reinforcement rings. These snares definitely had snare beds. Ploughman, a resident Rogers expert has at least three of these models in varying sizes and each has snare beds. I have a 1983 5 x 14 maple XP10 Dyna and it has snare beds. The drums during this 2 year period before the company folded also had brass "luglocks" and either black or green felt lug isolators. It is thought that in this era the Dynasonic and Superten shared the same shell, thus utilizing snare beds.

In this first pic, the slight snare bed begins just where you see the string from the snare frame in the background:

While your information/research is spot on!, the Rogers XP10 model wood Dynasonics aren't what is being bandied about here... it's the 60's era Rogers shell that Mallen1234 was concerned about, and to that end, the Dynasonic that he has pics of, with regard to the snare beds, is completely wrong.

I own/play two wood WMP Dynasonics, a 1966, and a 1967. I also had a 1965 in WMP, but sold that one to the late Bruce Felter. He was never able to find a NICE WMP Dynasonic for his collection, so I cut that one loose to him. He was quite pleased, and very grateful, but already I digress... Anyway,

The extremely miniscule snare bed WAS designed in on the wood Dynasonic from the start... but was it KEPT IN as Rogers continued to manufacture drums? Here's what I will do:

When it comes time to change out the resonant head on either one of my Dynasonics, I will check and see, using the Rogers method of a flat glass table in a darkened room, with a light used to illuminate the "snare bed", if in fact there is a snare bed. Actually, given my gig schedule, I may be able to do this before I have to change out the resonant head, as I will have some time off after the 31st of December. I shall return with the results!

Here's a pic of my '66 WMP Dynasonic... all original. Can you get any closer to using the word mint?! :-)

Hey joeybeats!...

THANK YOU very much for the kind words on my '66 Rogers WMP Dynasonic. This particular Dynasonic is one of the cleanest original examples I have seen, and the amazing thing is, it was my MAIN gigging snare drum for years up until I found my 1967 WMP Dynasonic. The neat thing is, BOTH of them are considered "Buddy Rich" models as they fall right in on his Rogers endorsement period. Course Buddy wasn't the only Rogers endorser to play a WMP Dynasonic, but he would most certainly be the most visible/remembered, followed closely by Louis Bellson!
