"Fake" vintage drums?

I'm confused about the early wood Dynasonics that you say might have had slight snare beds, because from the Rogers book (Rob Cook) I understood that they don't have snare beds at all. Am I missing something? Help

Rob has made a few errors in his books, which is understandable.

I may be wrong, but I remember a discussion about the wood dynas having a very slight snare bed. Maybe not. There are some real Rogers experts that hopefully will chime in...

I'll see if I can get some photos of the drum I'm refering to when I get to work tomorrow, then post them here...it's a beautiful drum, just not quite sure what its deal is just yet...

Rich K:

I also sent an e-mail to the seller of the Gretsch Floor Tom that you've linked in your post to ask if it was a re-wrap.

I asked mainly because I was convinced that it was, since I had a Slingerland Radio King Kit re-wrapped in the same finish by the Precision Drum Company and it looks IDENTICAL to this one, especially in the fourth pic that was posted. The seller of the drum never did get back to me. Just thought that I'd let you know.

Your not missing anything, from what I have learned listening and talking to TommyP is that it is miniscule... So if you are looking at it you could barely tell it was there...

So it is sort of correct to say they do not have snare beds like other vintage drums of that era...

On another note the Ebay example provided by Rich K is a good example for all of us to ask questions first especially if the item can be returned if you are not happy with something or determine it is not what was listed..

If the seller says no, then do not bid....

We do not always think of this when we really want an item, but it is a good practice to have.

Rogers book second ed. pg 179..."Ben Strauss said when Thompson was done with his design work the Dyna was .004 deep. Tissue paper is .002 and the Powertone was .008."

I've never worked with a feeler gauge to check!

I read a great book on the antique world recently. The writer really knew his stuff and said that perhaps as many as 5 in 10 antique collectables for sale in the UK is fake.

I know there are differences. A lot of people who buy an antique painting for instance, probably don't know much about art. Anyone who buys a wood dyna would presumeably know a little more about drums.

Still - as has been mentioned - where there's money to be made . . .

zero, right? not even a super slight one?

I still plan to get a photo up here, hopefully tomorrow. Sorry it's taking a bit.

Reasons out of my control. (Not including showing up with dead batteries!)

Ok, so when I first brought this up about this possibly fake Dyna, I seemed to recall only a squinter of a snare bed, but when it came time to take the photos...

Well, now it seems like a little more than that...

This past weekend my wife and I had the opprotunity to visit the Steve Maxwell shop (where we saw some completely outlandish items) and spoke briefly with Ben Gray about the Dynas. The zero snare bed was confirmed once again. Still, I said I'd put up the photos, so here they are. I'd like to hear thoughts on these from you guys...Sorry it took a bit longer than expected.
