Questions about my first vintage buy

Hi, I'm new to the site but I've been stalking around for a while now. I'm about to buy a 67 Ludwig hopefully this weekend. However, the drums are two hours away and I am a bit concerned about a couple things.

The kit is a 67 champagne sparkle 13, 16, 22 shell sizes

He says all the drums have keystone badges and say Chicago and the interiors are white. The drums also have the re-rings. So far it sounds good. The part im concerned about is he has only found a date stamp on one of the drums and there is no cymbal mount on the bass drum. It is also has chrome inlays on the bass drum hoops.

I have not yet asked for any serial numbers but that's my obvious next step. Does this kit sound like the higher end, sought after models? Also, is there any questions I should ask or anything in particular I should look for to help identify the kit?

Hi With out any photos iam taking a guess the set could have been a 5 piece set -2 mounted tom on bass drum.Look at the tom mount should be a post mount.Thats why no cymbal mount on bass drum.Hoops on bass could be re=placements.What is the asking price? Is the set complete? No missing parts? Condition of shells and wrap? Date stamps on the drums is no big deal sometimes these go missing ete...Mikey

The serial numbers on my 1968 4 pc are all very close in number. Between the 4 drums, there is one date stamp and one partial but un-readable date stamp. Not a big deal in my opinion.

Some buyers simply will not consider a drum with extra holes. Also try to determine if they have been re-wrapped. This kills the value. Remove the heads and look closely where the wrap overlaps. You may see signs that point to the drums being re-wrapped. Also, after all these years the original wrap will have faded. If the color is uniform all the way across, including up to the bearing edge, this is a major sign that the drums have been re-wrapped. If it's original wrap, the part that was covered will be darker, as in the picture.

Also of interest, if this is a 13-16-22 without the cymbal mount and it is not missing a tom, it would have been called a "Deluxe Classic" in the catalog, as opposed to the more common "Super Classic". Also there were hardware (stands, etc.) differences between them as well. You can search the old catalog scans on our sister site, found at the top of the header, "Vintage Drum Identification".

Thanks for the help, guys. After getting the serial numbers I went ahead and checked the drums out on Saturday, and ended up bringing them home with me. Everything seems to be in pretty good condition with just a couple minor (to me) things. The inlays on the bass drum hoops are actually just vinyl sticker/decals the guy put on over the chrome. It almost matches, but not completely. Also he said the snare is a Supraphonic, but I'm not 100% on that and the strainer is not original. It has the new ludwig logo on it. He also gave me all of the original heads that came with the kit in 1967, but they're pretty used and so are the ones that are on the kit now. I have new Remo Vintage A's on the way already. Anyways, here are a couple photos I took when I got it home. Can anyone help identify the snare? Thanks!

That's an interesting way to use your bass drum spurs. Although you have them reversed, they probably work better that way. The idea behind the design was that they fold in and out like "gull wings" to make them more portable.

You did real good! You snagged them for at least $300. under 'fair' market value for the kit. A 'nice score.'

Classy kit. Have fun playing them. If that's 3-ply maple under there, you also have a wonderful sounding kit. The sound of those drums is why I am such a vintage Ludwig lover.
