Premier Soundwave Project

Well despite being local to me, I was resolutely not going to buy this kit. So imagine my surprise when I ended up buying it. That surprise was minor compared to the surprise I got when I saw them in person. Years of being stored out at a popular surf beach has taken its toll on the chrome and it looked like it had lived in a dirty shed for years. I was annoyed with myself.

Anyway, I'll treat it as a rescue project as no money is going be made from selling them I'm pretty sure.

I've just started on the 13" tom and apart from the hoops the drum is sound and in pretty good shape. The lugs are not perfect but considering the neglect they will come up pretty good. Most of the heads are original on the kit so the insides of the shells have been well preserved. The exterior finish must be tough because there's not a mark on the 13".

I believe this is a Soundwave kit from the early 80s. 3 ply Birch shells with Beech re-rings, so a classic Premier formula. It came with the original Trilok hihat and snare stand but you have to look hard to find any chrome plating left on them:)

I'll keep you updated on progress

Really Like the look of those shells, but so much for putting your feet up over Christmas..

Still, if anyone can bring those back to life, it's you..

Cheers

Thanks Fellas, that's very kind. It'll certainly keep me busy.

The hoops are beyond repair so I'll replace those. And I'm thinking of just using the 13" tom as I'm missing a couple of small tom mount parts so only one can be mounted. The parts are probably easy enough to get in England but not so easy here. We'll see.

I have to say, 80s kits wouldn't normally interest me but these Soundwave kits could be from the 70s frankly, which is a good thing, although it might not have been so good in the 80s when drummers started wanting deep toms and big hair.

The 80's loss is certainly your gain. Those are lovely shells.

Seriously, this is not bad at all. You won't save the chrome, but from what I see in the photos, those rims themselves are still salvageable. And the shells look great.

Gilnar - how would you deal with the rims? I've just about completed the 13" and had a couple of spare rims but I'll have to buy replacement 16s

Well, maybe I'm wrong, but I think you can just grind the rust off, probably along with the chrome plating and once you have clean, bare steel, treat it w/ some lacquer or conservative coating. Probably too much work for too visually unattractive results if you have the spare rims, but if you don't, why not try it?

Thanks Gilnar. Luckily the rims are triple flange so not too hard to replace reasonably inexpensively.

Here's the 13" finished with some old rims I had that cleaned up pretty well. When I said there wasn't a mark on it I was maybe being a bit over positive. There are some marks and dents but pretty good considering.

The lugs are quite interesting. They sit on a separate metal plinth and are attached with two different sized screws. Only one of the screws holds the lug in place. The other just holds the plinth.

The last photo is actually the inside of the 14" as I forgot to photograph the 13" interior before putting the heads on. I polished the interior with a beeswax polish so it looks even nicer. The exterior also got the beeswax treatment as well as a wax.

That 13" looks great. Those are beautiful shell's. I know it is frowned upon but If you feel those chrome hoops are pretty far gone, I have had excellent results with the turtle wax chrome polish and steel wool. Squirt some on the steel wool and a little elbow grease. I had some hoops that looked horrible with some rust and they cleaned up beautifully. I think I have a Tom mount for that 12 but the big T wing nut is broken. It works though until you can find a T wing nut somewhere. Just half the T is broken off.
