Pearl? Year? Thanks!

Loading...

Picked this up today. 22/12/13/16. Doesn't look like it ever had badges. Only mark have found so far is MIT on the bass spur washers. Thick shells cut at 45 degrees. Sounds darn good even with bad heads. Need 2 t rods and a hoop if anyone has extra's

Based on my personal experience as a Maxwin/CB700 owner and the catalogs here:

http://www.drumarchive.com/Maxwin/

My guess is a 1978 (or a year or two earlier based on the bass drum spurs) Maxwin-by-Pearl) Stage 805 set.

Based on what I saw in garages and on small stages in the early '80's, they must have sold boatloads of these. They hold some fondness for me because every broke punk rock kid back in the day had a CB700 set.

I started playing drums 3 years ago after rescuing the remains of a similar kit (but with the 13" and 14" mounted tom toms) from my neighbor's lawn.

I'm not surprised they sound good. Pearl seemed to have finally gotten pretty good at lauan plywood, and it's been aging for 35 years. Back in the punk rock days, these kits never had a problem getting LOUD enough!

One suggestion: while you have the heads off, treat the bearing edges with some paste wax or Feed 'n' Wax. It'll help keep the lauan from getting splint'ry.

I actually did the complete interiors of mine with Feed 'n' Wax but it looks like yours are sealed with paint.

Not sure where you are, but I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and have a hoop for the bass drum. I would have no idea how to ship such a thing.

Erik,

Many thanks for the help. Will do on the bearing edges. Interiors are indeed sealed with a rather thick coat of white. Same on all drums.

Have done some cleanup on the 12. Liking what I see. All will need complete tear down For late 70's these have been lucky.

Pics attached. P-100 bass pedal included as well. Have had far worse pedals (and many better) :-).

Hope all is good in the Bay area. Did several years in Sunnyvale/San Jose. Escaped to Spokane, WA. If you have a blue metal 22" hoop shipping will be easy. I'll send you a box with a pre-paid return label. Hoop in box UPS will pick up, it is on the way north.

Well this is a first for me. I've never seen a no-badge "Pearl" drum set that wasn't a stencil. Even the badged entry-level drums aren't particularly common, maybe through natural attrition...

Interesting, do you think it is a Pearl kit? Or something else.

Looked for signs of badge residue around the vent holes. Nothing.

Thanks!

Fond feelings toward the P-100 pedal as well. My rescue kit did not come with a functioning bass pedal, so I bought a P-100 from a guy on Craig's List.

Met him at Embarcadero BART station and he showed up with a bag of other goodies he was getting rid of, just gave me, including a Pearl Jungle Jig (including the RIMS mount) that later formed the basis of my cafe kit, and an LP cowbell with mount. Nice lad, I hope he is doing well.

Replacing the loaner Tama pedal with the P-100 greatly increased my right foot's ability.

Don't know how long you've been away from the Bay, but we've lost every drum store but Drummer's Tradition in San Rafael. Housing costs are causing upheaval. It's still a great place to live.

I have some 22" metal hoops, but none with blue inlay.

My Jr. Highschool band had a silver version of this kit. It was branded "continental" in silver metal stickers.

It was plain Jane luan with the two pronged breather vents. Same Spurs but the tom holders diddnt curve up like the swivomatics.

By the way 93 Rock KRXQ was a radio station in Sacramento california. We used to use sharpies to make it say F*ck it up!

The station was bought by intercom and Is now 98 Rock. Which used to be 98.5 KZAP our original free play radio station from the 60's

One corporate entity owns nearly all of our radio stations now.

That is funny on the radio sticker. If this is a kit from SAC would explain the condition. Here is a pic of the rest.

Thanks,

Bit of a snag. Busted tom holder. Not falling apart so is the ball threaded to the hex rod and then welded? Thanks for any help.

Rest of the pics are just bit's coming out of final soaks. Tumble and then polish/wax will be ready to install. Great chrome plating job on this kit.
