Pearl wood / fiberglass in red oyster

And if I remember right, yours were in pretty close to mint shape weren't they?

They were in really great shape with the exception of the fact that I replaced the Rogers Swivomatic clone hardware with the new at the time Vari-Set hardware. Otherwise well cared for. I should point out that the edges really needed to be recut as they were not all that great from the factory in the first place.

I remember you saying that about the edges. I've run into some problems, but never anything a little hand sanding didn't take care of. I also remember you had some matching concert toms... maple shell, right?

Whenever I get a kit like this to refurb, I've always upgraded to the vari-set hardware. It's so much better, and these kits are always player's kits anyway; never high-dollar value on the secondary collector's market.

Thanks for the input guys

after reading some of the responses

I was thinking more of passing on them

but none the less I was still tempted by the color of them

However I just recieved an e-mail from the seller

his cousin who was the original owner of the kit

saw that my seller had them for sale and according to him

his cousin asked to buy them back

so long story short ..They are gone Kenwood

Well, I guess that settles it.

The color of my 1978s isn't quite as unique but they are in mint condition, if you're interested.

I'm wanting a lot more money, of course... :)

I just picked up an early 70's Pearl all fiberglass kit for $145. Had a Toca conga, 2 20" Sabian B8s and a set of AA Rock hats with it. I am in the process of finding parts for it.

One problem: Pre 1967 the Japanese had a different standard for their metric bolts and screws "Japanese Industrial Standard." Although the diameters were the same the pitch (number of thread turns per unit) was different. Some of the bolts and screws on that set could cause you some troubles. I found on this on the screws that hold the lugs and the screws that hold some of the other hardware on my 1970's kit. It is not an insurmountable problem since you can replace an entire lug with a new one and replace any screws that do not screw into piece of hardware that has a threaded hole in it. For other screws in the M4-M8 range you may just be out of luck. nobody has made a replacement in over 40 years. (that I could find.)

I am having a hard time replacing one of the bass drum spurs. I picked up a set of Gibraltars under someone's advice only to find out that the hole pattern is waaay off. I am one of those people who won't drill a shell unless I have to.

I've seen some of the other parts you are missing on ebay, but like the other folks already posted it is going to cost you.

Hope that helps.

BTW: The all fiberglass shells are beautifully thunderous!

Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.

Bill, they look like the gorgeous set you have on ebay. These have the hex style tom holder rods, though. 12, 13, 16, 22. The bearing edges are good. The wrap is scratched up in areas, but not peeling. There is also some fading/discoloration and what looks like some paint overspray that I couldn't polish off. I have the front hoop for the bass. The COB snare did not come with. I picked that up somewhere else. The kit came with a cheap, made-in-China Tama 14x5 COS. I am only missing one spur, one claw and a couple proper tom holder tensioners. The bass pedal is era correct but has a busted frame. More hardware is one era cymbal stand that is good and one non era correct Pearl Speed Pedal hi hat stand. I'm guessing that the hat stand is early 60's, but I'd like to know from you expert types.

Sold the conga that came with it this morning for $40. That puts my initial cost down to $105. I've got at least that in it for replacement lugs, tension rods, bottom heads etc.

Please excuse the mess in the photos. I was excited to replace the little mahogany bebop kit with the 18" bass. The 22" fiberglass is very low and immediate. No mellowing of mahogany, just a heavy, jack-boot kick to the gizzard. Mmmm!

Bill, if you have a spur for me drop me a note at chris_lekan AT hotmail DOT com

Nice score! I'm jealous and envious!

The hihat stand is probably 60s but looks like a MIJ generic that came with all the Wards, Sears, etc. kits of that era.

I'm 99% sure I have one spur like you need. I'll check and email you.

The BD pedal is what came standard with the kit. I see one of it's bottom hoop clamps is broken. It's made of cast aluminum, so the whole part of the assembly has to be replaced. I have that, too.

I've probably got the correct wing-nuts for your tom mounts, but I'll need to check.

Again, nice find... and I'll be in touch!
