Pearl crystal Beat take 2

From FloydZKing

Andrew, that's funny because my friend's great sounding recording set also has pinstripes on the toms. They are modern ones though and far livelier than classic 80s pins. They aren't far from a G2 sound.I have long been infatuated with NZ and I wonder what the drum wildlife is like there. It seems like there would be lots of Premier, Pearl and Yamaha. Is that close?

That's good to know about the pin stripes. They are pretty much new so we'll see how they sound when I've put it all back together.

You're right about the drum life here. Premiers and MIJ are most common and in the 60s there were a lot of bands playing Trixon but they rarely surface now. We seemed to be a place where manufacturers sent hard to move inventory. I have a 64 oyster pink Slingerland kit that was sold new here and I know of a similar kit that will be coming up for sale soon, also sold new here. There is at least one more knocking around as well. I also picked up a Hayman BOP kit that are rare pretty much everywhere. As you'd know, rare usually means unpopular when they were new.

the 13" and 16" toms are done and look pretty good. I've just stripped the BD and polished the shell. Unfortunately it's crazed pretty bad and can't be fixed but structurally it's pretty much perfect so it'll sound good and possibly look like it's made of ice, which will be interesting

Well they are pretty much done apart from a new batter head for the bass drum that is on order. The snare that came with it was a 14x6.5 Tama Swingstar from the early 80s which I'm yet to clean up so for the purpose of the photos I've put in an era correct Star King Beat. The stands are all original but the BD pedal is a replacement. I've set it up as a 22/13/16 as the 12" tom is bright red... and this is the configuration I play.

The BD is quite cloudy but it's not as noticeable as I thought it would be. I'm yet to play it because it's too loud for the house.

You did a great job on that kit, Andrew. Cool1 The bass does look a bit cloudy buy since the audience would mostly see the kit it face on it doesn't detract much from those crystal clear toms.

Nice job as usual. They look great, the kick almost looks like the "Shower Door "finish.

I played a fiber glass kit with that swivo style hardware, very functional for everyday use.

thanks guys. I'm quite pleased with the results. Searching around the interwebs shows there aren't too many of these around. I read somewhere that they sold for $US1200 in the 70s so I imagine they didn't sell too many.

about 3 weeks ago. You may remember the one in Christchurch? That was also mine. I purchased it but the condition was poor and the cost of getting it up to me made it a no go, so I sold it on TM. This is a better kit. Not perfect but pretty good. It cost more but was closer and it came with some nice cymbals too.

Here's the post about the other kit: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=38652&highlight=pearl+crystal+beat
