Pearl crystal Beat take 2

A few weeks back I posted this thread about a Pearl Crystal Beat kit I'd purchased in a sorry state. I decided it was going to be too expensive to ship it home and too much work as well, so I sold it. I turns out they are like buses and another showed up closer to home. I won the auction and picked them up today.

What I'm learning about these kits is that the acrylic material can go hazy and crazed and it's not repairable. This one is no different but at least it's confined to the Bass drum. On the positive side it's mostly complete except for the snare which is a Tama Swingstar 14x6.5 from the 80s. It came with most of the original hardware as well as some 60s Zildjian A hats and some Paiste 101 crashes. The seller said there was another cymbal somewhere which he was having trouble finding. But find it he did and it turned out to be a pre-serial Paiste 20" 602. So a very nice bonus indeed.

So I'll start on a resto very soon but this is how she looks now. As you will see she was once red and all but the 12" has faded to nearly clear with just a hint of red remaining. I guess the 12" was stored away somewhere dark on its own.

you may be able to restore the bass drum with a headlight restoration kit from an auto shop, the bass drum looks like my headlights a couple of months ago and the "Rain ex" kit made them like new. the kit you need must have the sealer with it, it is this that makes the surface shine and protects it.

hope this helps

The issue seems to be within the acrylic material. It's completely smooth to the touch but it looks like someone has been wiping it with a rag. Reading on the net leads the to believe it's irreversible. It'll still be a cool kit when I'm done though.

Yep, it's red. That's what the whole kit looked like once upon a time

I was looking at the pics of your kit and wondering – is there a way to

dye/color the inside of the lighter shells to match the original tom?

That would be cool if they could be tinted to match.

Great looking kit, can't wait to see how it turns out!

I was thinking about how to get the 12" tom to match the rest of the kit. I quite like the clear look. I play one up anyway so I'll just use the 13" probably.

A old trick I use on scratched and clouded/hazed acrylic/plexiglass is too wipe some oil on it. The downfall is it isn't a permanent fix. Many of the old offset presses I have run have plexiglass windows in some of the covers. So this is a simple trick to make them somewhat translucent again. On yours maybe some vegi and olive oil would work? I wouldn't use automotive oils due to the smell and toxic nature. Yep looks like someone wiped them with either alcohol or some type of mineral spirit that may of caused the clouding. Either way cool kit!!

Thanks FFR428. The crazing seems to be a chemical reaction inside the acrylic material and a common problem with these. But I'll give anything a go.

Here's the 13" tom stripped and polished with Novus #2. It's almost completely clear with just a hint of red remaining. We'll call it rose tinted. No crazing or clouding on this one.
