Pearl COB

What can you guys tell me about this drum? It kinda looks like Pearl's answer to the Dyna.

Betcha this is actually a simple steel snare not a COB. I have this model and like it alot- wonderful, inexpensive model- responsive and has an internal muffler. Jupiters have a parallel strainer and three ridges along the side (not two like this one). I got my one of this exact model on Ebay a few years ago in good condition for 35$

I recently picked up the drum which is the version immediately previous to this one--diamond lugs and the earlier"tip"strainer, but the same shell and rims.Nice all around drum,NOT a Jupiter or COB.The Pearl section of the VDG shows how many lines COB's have. These are steel.Being a 10 lugger,I'd price this drum at $125 retail. And,though some may disagree, not alot different sound-wise from the 5-line stencil counterpart,if it's 8 or even 10 lug(which I've seen under the Maxwin brand). The stencils kept the tip strainer, which work fine if they aren't overtightened.By the way-don't over tighten that one either-the "handle"snaps off.

COB's have 3 fairly wide lines, whether they are Jupiter's or standard throw.VDG 1974 snare catalog page.

This is indeed a Jupiter COB snare. The Jupiter snares could be ordered with parallell or single snare mechanism. And 14"x5" or 14"x6.5"

I have had a few of these and I think they are very good snare drums. Nice and crisp! :-)

brother Ringo, I hear you and don't want to disagree - but I myself would have to remain skeptical about this one being a COB. A magnet would tell all for sure though- The Pearl catalogs show different model designs- I have seen different designs and badges on same year catalogs between the US and Japan versions. As I said in my post I have never encountered one of this exact design in COB only steel. Here are pics of my same exact one as this design which is a steel shell and then a photo of my Jupiter COB from just around the same year/ same era.

Lastly: Here is also a photo of a STAR COB with diamond lugs, 2 lines and the fancy parallel strainer. Just goes to prove the point that there really were a hell of a lot of designs (see final photo) but Juptiers or COB Kingbeats always had lots of extras.

What I find unconvincing about the drum in question is the throw and butt- they were very standard- Jupiters were a top line model- Pearl always did something more on the Jupiters- parallel strainers or die cast hoops- lots of engineering. The steel drums are great as seen in my first photo.

I had thought when I originally got the diamond-lug drum that it may have been COB,because it had a brassy tint in it's interior. But the magnet test proved otherwise.I had some bad pitting/peeling at the snare head line,so I sanded it down and hit copper plating.Interesting that these steel and COB drums are identical externally. If all else fails-the magnet ends all speculation.Yes Sir

HEY WAIT A MINUTE! THAT IS A STAR DRUM! And mine is a Pearl. My drum has President style Diamond lugs, but the same shell ridges and lines.CATS AND DOGS-LIVING TOGETHER......

I concur, that one snare is a Star KingBeat, not a Jupiter at all. Look at the strainer end, is plainly reads "Star" on the bottom of the release....

I went back and edited my post - that final drum is actually a STAR drum that looks very similar to a Jupiter-

The only reason I am trying so hard to raise a question of steel or COB here is that a steel drum is worth less than 50$ and a COB is basically worth more than 150$ and it's hard to tell from photos which is which. Good luck hunting this one!Sumo Dude

Naw man, this is a a real forum Ringo- you can post and work through ideas- say and think what you want- it's cool- I just don't want you to waste money if it's a risk. I have heard of probably 10 drummers who bought supposed COBs online only to find out they were steel drums- this one looked so identical to my steel drum that I just had to tell you that. Be well and I look forward to your posts
