Ordered set of hi-hats - I think one is a Vintage Zildjian

Loading...

I found this listing on ebay and did the buy it now ($30 after shipping). It was listed as Pearl CX-300 hi hats. Obviously the one on the left is a Pearl but the right hat caught my attention. I have owned several vintage Zildjian cymbals and I am pretty certain that this cymbal is an old zildjian. Opinions???

Good buying. It looks like a mid to late 60s A Zildjian to me, based on the lathing style on the bell, particularly what I nicknamed the "bald spot". The area from the mounting hole out for about half an inch has very fine lathing, so much so that it often appears completely smooth in photos. This is seen in the later 60s:

and in the 70s:

The visible hammering on the top is also consistent with that mid 60s to 70s production era.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate the info. Good to know a date range on this cymbal :)

Can you tell if this is mostly like a "top" or "bottom" hi hat cymbal?

I also agree with Zenstat on the probable era based on the visuals. The weight may help determine its original intended use.

The general rule of thumb for a 14" from that era would be...

If it is more than 1000g then it is probably either a hat bottom or a marching/band cymbal. Marching/band cymbals make nice New Beat style bottoms. If it is less than 1000g then it could either be a top or a bottom from a pair of "matched" hats.

Matched means the top and bottom of the pair are a similar weight, and contrasts with New Beat style where the bottom is distinctly heavier. Here is a by the decades overview of weights
