Orange sparkle "Star" drums (barn fresh sorta)

Loading...

Hello again, vintage non-U.S.A. drum folks

I found an old Star brand drum kit the other day

It is in very decent original condition save for a few missing parts

They are orange sparkle with rectangular shaped Star badges.

sizes are 22" 8 lug bass drum with black steel hoops with os inlays

12" mounted tom w/triple flange hoops

and a matching eight lug snare drum.

It is my guess, that the missing floor tom, is not so much missing

as maybe never having been purchased with the kit in the first place.

Still I would sure like to have one, none the less.

The drums showed up on Craig's list here in Rhode Island

They were found in an old factory building, where they had been stored for some thirty years or more.

Along with the drums was a cardboard box with some assorted parts and accessories. that are mostly all original to the drums from day #1

In this box was the bass drum pedal, the cymbal arm, the spur rods, the tom mount, a wood block (no mounting gear)and a chrome plated cow bell and mount, also in the box was some assorted sticks including the original Star pair

and a pair of reddish rubber brushes ..which were made by Premere

and lastly one cymbal ...stamped Japan on the underside

All three drums have the original heads which are in good shape save for being filthy. the attachable, hoop mounted, bass drum muffler is present but missing the muffler disc itself.

Other missing parts are the roller bearing for one side of the bass pedal and the spring and tension adjustment,

also missing on the snare drum throw is

the top knob and throw lever mech.

I was surprised by the steel hoops on the bass drum

I would have thought they would be wooden hoops.

If any of the Star experts can help date the kit that would be great

And needless to say a matching orange sparkle floor tom shell would be great to find ....Kenwood

Hi,

While I am not an expert by any means, I have a similar rectangular badged kit with the same lugs.

I assume that your drum shells will be the thin shells with reinforcement rings as mine are. Could you post a picture of the interior for the other Star experts to see....will likely be helpful.

I believe the drums are from the mid to late 60's .

Here is a link to a great website that will help you. It is run by a forum member. http://www.star-drums.de/

Hello Bryan,

Thanks for the great reply about the Star kit

I see yours is a wmp kit which is my favorite of all drum wraps

I bought the drums yesterday (Saturday)morning and drove them over to my shop, I set them up quickly and then left for home

On my next trip to the shop I will pull one of the heads off and see about the interior construction. I do have one problem in that the pics my camera takes are way too large to upload here at VDF on my old computer with the XP operateing system I had downloaded a resizing program from X.P.toys

with a simple right click I could resize any pic.

Unfortunatley on this new computer I have the new windows seven

and am not able to resize the pics I take

..those I have uploaded here on this thread, and on a few others have all been pics uploaded by the sellers of the few kits I have purchased

onto the craigs list site that I saved from there

Recently...I wanted to show off my "Black Jack" drum kit

on one of the other threads and was unable to upload the pics I shot because of the files being too large

Thank you also for the Star drums link it looks AWESOME!!!....kenwood

Kenwood,

If you want to send a PM to me, I will send you my email address and you can send the pictures to me. I think I can get them posted for you.

I have attached a shot of my WMP Stars for you so you can compare to yours.

Hey Bryan, P.M. sent

WOW!! I love those wmp Stars of yours pal they look beautiful

Some differences I can see at a glance would be the bass drum

Yours is most likely 20" as you have six lugs per side?

while mine I was surprised to see was 22" with eight lugs per side

you have chrome hoops mine are black steel

Your bass drum has the rail consolette style tom mounting system

While mine has the downtube into female bass drum reciever type ...not sure what it is called officially.

I was jazzed to find a drum kit with actual Star badges

but was less than thrilled with the orange sparkle wrap

Not that I dislike the color ...but just because I have three umm err...well lets say two and one half other stencil kits in the very same orange sparkle

I would have been ten times the happy camper had they been wrapped in white marine pearl while otherwise being in the same general condition as I found them

Hello Kenwood,

that's a nice little Star drumset in Gold Sparkle Pearl, made around 1966/68. Often these sparkle finishes are faded but yours still look great! Furtheron the hardware seems to be in still outstanding condition - that's rare.

I doubt whether there has been added a floor tom from the beginning: those sets were sold in your configuration, too, at that time.

Are you really sure that your bass drum has black METAL hoops?! To me they appear to be made of wood (with the typical marks at the bottom from the clamp of the pedal).

The tom bracket that you mean is called: 'Retracting single tom-tom holder'.

Congrats on the find!

Ralf

Hello Ralf,

Thank you most kindly for your post

and congrats on the Star Drums web site

ahh.... "retracting single tom tom holder"

thanks for setting me straight on that detail

as for the hoops I will admit I am pretty much blind as a bat

but that aside I am still about 95% sure they are black painted steel

the rash you see is most likely from the bass pedal where the paint was chewed up some and the steel has rusted in that area.

I am wondering if my Black Jack kit is Star also? as the badges are identical

in shape and color with "Black Jack" in place of "Star"

furthermore I have a distressed blue sparkle Ralston brand kit

with identical bass drum t-rods as one of the kits in your photo gallery

if this all checks out, I will take pics of my badges to add them to your Awesome little site ..Regards from U.S.A. Kenwood

Hi Kenwood, Yes Ralf is right on the date 1966-68..But iam with Ralf on the bass drum hoops if they are metal then they have been replaced at on time..Metal hoops on bass drums do not come on the Star made sets from 66-68.The hoop should be ood or can be a plastic made hoop..

Also Kenwood i do have the parts that you need for the pedal for the bass drum..I also have the Premier parts that you P/M'd e about too..Mikey

Hello Mikey,

Thank You for the quick reply to my inquiry on those Olympic parts

and 1,000 pardons in my slow follow up

I have yet to remember to count the lugs on the mount tom

each time I settle in here at home to my computer and am thinking VDF

I remember about the Olympics which of course are back at the shop

I will tie a string on my finger for my next trip to the shop

I was glad to know I might find the parts to complete them

I wish I had more to that kit than just a bass and mount tom

as the green silk pearl wrap is such a great color

As for the bass pedal parts for this Star kit that sounds great as well

is there any chance you would have the parts for the snare drum throw?

I am a little let down about the hoops on the Star bass drum

I do not think they are wood, they may be plastic but I really think they are steel..which makes no sense when considering how original everything else seems to be ..if they are steel and non-original ..then the switch-a-roo was done a long while back.

The first thing I will do is pull one off to make certain as to what is what ...Kenwood
