Old Yamaha kit...

Hello guys.

I have been on the hunt for a smaller size kit for knocking around with.

I found the (very nice) Yamaha Club custom birch kits to be quite nice, and I also found a few years old Sonor maple kit for about the same money, but it is a bit if a haul to go get that (still tempting me)...

I found an old Yamaha kit, a bit closer and quite a bit less expensive not too far away. Downside is it is clearly missing some parts, and I have no idea how difficult it will be to source those parts. It looks like the following are missing:

12" hoop and all the tension screws for it. (maybe other tension screws also missing?)

20" kick hoop, as well as 8 claws and t-rods (maybe more t-rods missing- hard to tell)

Tom mount- not the end of the world, since I'll probably use a snare stand for the 12" tom, but it would be cool to have it. And it may be there too- I can't tell in the pictures.

Stands and maybe a matching snare? It is a red streaked finish (not sure of name) that looks OK in the crappy pictures... Worst case I'll re-wrap it, but it would be cool to preserve the original finish if I can.

Any tips, tricks, sources of supply, experts on these old drums etc. greatly appreciated.

I sent a PM to the owner of these:

So maybe he knows some places to get parts...

It might be cool to have the old and new Yamaha technology represented...Cool1

Thanks in advance to everyone!Clapping Happy2

Somebody school me on Yamaha drums... some folks say their great (especially the old ones) some folks say their poop. So which is it.

I owned an 80's oak Yamaha snare for about a week once... got it at a yard sale for $2.00 bucks (yes, two dollars) and gave it to a neighbor kid. I never did play it, and now that kid is off in college back east. So he's no help! :)

If the set is the vintage as the ones in the photo.Yes these are good sounding drums. They are the same shell that Yamaha made for the Rogers 360/380 sets of the late 60's...As far as the parts missing T-rods are no problem for the tom or bass drum i have these parts. Also have the claws and tom mount missing parts. These complete set's sell from 200.00-300.00+ ....Mikey

Well, I finally heard back from the seller today, and will be picking up the red Yamaha kit.

He has no other parts, so I'm on the hunt before getting them home...

I'll post some pictures at some point, but I don't know if I'll be able to work on them this weekend or not...

I do still like that Maple Sonor kit, so I might have to call that guy too. It's a haul to the depths of nowhere to get them, but they seem decent enough.

That is SWEET!

Here's a pic of them now... I should have them later, but I have to ship my bass drum to Germany so that takes priority...Violin

I don't think it is red willow color, but not a solid red either... Sort of retro-cool red... The stand next to the bass drum may be the same vintage, but the one next to the FT looks newer. The FT has legs (no idea if correct) and the bass has at least one spur (cuz you can see it!), but it will e a fun project. Not a Gretch round badge, but cool in its own right. It looks like the original logo head too, but it is beat to death obviously... Might have to scrub clean and then cut a hole in it to preserve it.

I'm excited for this project!

Nice one Jim. It's red ripple like this one http://www.coopersvintagedrums.com/yamripple.htm. They seemed to come with all sorts of BD tom mounting hardware. It's a D-series kit like my Black willow. I use my one as my main gigging kit - well made, great sound, look cool and reliable hardware.Walking

I just got it! Both original heads on the floor Tom. Ride Tom mount is there and complete. Quick glance shows no wrap cracks. Some lugs are pitted and it is missing one bass spur. Just tapping the 12 I can tell these are going to sound sweet!

Oh and one cymbal is a Zildjian 12" special recording hat!

I was on the way back with that last post, but now I have opened the link you provided Fayray. The shells are all Birch! My favorite!Walking

Mine are gray inside, and I noticed the 12" tom muffler is painted an almond/tan color, which I thought was wierd... Two rectangular pads of gray felt on the muffler.

Judging from the stock original floor tom heads, I have to assume this kit has not been molested at ALL.

The now batter head of the bass drum is the original resonant head. I am psyched to play this kit!

I forgot to mention it has the cymbal mount on the bass, but no arm of course.

Anyone have one of these, or is there a modern one that will work (even if not correct until I find the right one)?

Finished one in that color recently.... here is the link to the thread. Picked up a real nice brown willow kick and 12. Had some wood hoop damage, but after some epoxy, sanding and paint they came out real clean. Just need to find the 14" floor to complete it... all in due time.
