I got this drum tonight. The guy said it was from an old ludwig kit. It has no badge. (There is some sort of metal attached still but nothing you can make out.) There are no leg holes. I guess this could be a virgin shell but my thought is it is a marching drum. Anyone have any thoughts to share?
Old Ludwig Questions
It looks WFL., Is there a badge?
If it's a marching drum, you'll often find some extra holes for a harness attachment -- either two holes for a pair of eye bolts or two pairs of holes for "tilters".
There is no badge but there is a piece of some type of metal around the vent hole on top. The only holes on this drum are the lug holes (ten on each side) and the vent/badge hole on top. It is a 24" and the stamp inside (which is directly across from the vent hole) is in red but I cant make out what the date is. It also looks like a big 24 written on it. Oh and that is a WMP wrap that only has half left on it.
Maybe it had hoop mounted spurs. Nice drum!
Yes your bass drum will need clamp on spurs, and WFL made a ton of bass drum with out spur holes!
Can you explain to me how you look at the drum and what details make you think it looks like a WFL?
Tomorrow I will try to take some better pics and post them here.
Here are some more pics that i took outside with natural day light. I will start a new post to show the progress of the project. I am going to try to make this into a mahogany kit with blonde hoops like Levon Helm played in the Last Waltz (during The Weight w/ Staple singers)
Any ideas or thoughts would as always be WAY appreciated!
If you turn the date picture upside down, I think it says Nov 18 and possibly the year 1954.
Nice drum, by the way...
