New Tempro MIJ Kit and mistery kit.

My guess is that the maker of the generic Tempro set did not have any single tom receiving mounts for the bass drum. So, they installed the double mount over to the drummer's left for a single tom.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Good eye! So the previous owner had the drums set up as concert toms and used the snare as a 14” Tom. The set up as such: 12” 14” and 16”. In order for him to do that, he removed the snare throw and put the original bass drum Tom mount receiver there. (No extra holes). He then installed the double Tom mount at the bass drum and used two of the original holes and drilled two more. (Hence the off center mount). Kinda wonky, but it worked for him and I respect that. The positive side of things was that because he used the snare as a Tom, he needed a snare. Well, he purchased this Ludwig Jazz Festival snare to go along with his kit. All included in the package deal I got. A smoking deal by the way.

My first improvised drum set was probably similar to what many other aspiring drummers kluged together. A junior high school friend's parents gave me some old drums in their basement that came from the barn of a deceased older relative. There was a big bass drum--probably 28" diameter with a volcano scene painted on the front bass drum head. There were also the remains of a couple old snare drums and a rickety old bass drum pedal. I already had a hand-me-down snare drum. The bass drum still functioned. I set up the two old snare drums with batter heads on card table chairs and my good snare drum on it's proper stand. I was able to buy the cheapest 10" cymbal at a music store. That cymbal bent every time it was hit hard. I'll bet that many of you did similar things. By the way... my dad put a red light bulb in the socket inside the bass drum. He also put a flasher button under the bulb in the socket. When plugged in, the flashing red light gave the appearance that the lava was flowing down from the mountain top. I have no remembrance of what happened to those old drums. I wish that I had kept that bass drum.

That’s an awesome story! I can picture the bass drum with the lava flowing. Very cool!

Thank you for sharing.

Here is a quick progress update. Once I have more work finished, I'll start a new thread under the restoration section.

Thanks again for all of your help.
