New Tempro MIJ Kit and mistery kit.

Loading...

Hi all,

I recently scored these two kits for a VERY good price. This will be my first venture into MIJ kits. The kits are complete and came with some sweet Ludwig Speedkings and ludwig Hi hat stands.

The Tempro kits it’s by far in the best shape. Nice kit in my opinion.

The other kit is a brand I couldn’t find a single thing about. Not sure if MIJ or made in Taiwan. Have you heard or have any idea? West Percussion.

This one had some surface rust on some of the chrome and the wrap is cracked and missing parts. My thoughts was to remove the wrap and give them a smooth sanding. Then cover with some clear coat or some tung oil. Thoughts?

Here are some pictures.

West Percussion sounds like a store. MIJ would usually put a dealers store name on a kits badge.

Yes, it could be a store name. Judging by the Pearl lugs and tom holders, the kit looks like a mid-70's. The shells look like luan, aka Phillipine Mahogany. It would make a good practice kit!

Wow. Those were some fast responses. Thank you.

I think you’re right. I came across a 1970’s pearl kit with the exact same hardware. From the bass drum Spurs, all the way to the tension rods. So I figured it had to be from that era. I think I have a good plan for it... I know two toddlers that I would like for them to start venturing into this drumming world. Lol.

I really like the color on the Tempro kit. The pictures don’t do it justice. It has this very nice sparkle with any light. Specially sun light. I have a feeling it’ll be a favorite kit for a while. And that bass drum is a 20”... my favorite size kick.

Are the Tempro kits made from Luan wood too?

Nothing could make for an uglier drum set than to strip, sand, and clear lacquer a luan drum set. Even most major brands of wrapped drum shells are made with outer plies that are less than attractive. If you're not going to re-wrap them, at least paint them to hide the ugly cheap wood.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

After watching some videos/pictures of drums being clear coated after the wrap was removed, I couldn’t agree more. I’m leaning to painting the drums for now. Of course, once I complete my other 3 projects....

I just noticed on the Tempro kit, it looks like the hex arm (Rogers Swivo Copies) double tom receiver on the bass drum is mounted off center! I've never seen that before. I've seen off center mounted rails, but never an off center mounted double (or single) post/arm.

Those West Percussion drums are as generic as generic gets.

That Tempro kit looks really nice. I'm guessing they are Luan shells as well. Are they painted gray on the inside or are they natural? Do they have re-rings?
