New old Ludwig kit

Loading...

Hi, I recently aquired another Ludwig kit. It is a white marine pearl. A 16x26 bass, 15 rack tom and 18 floor tom. The snare is a Coliseum, 8x14, that matches the rest of the kit. There are 2 sets of spurs, front and back, on the kick, which also is a 10-lug with inlaid hoops. The toms are both 8 lug, which are classic mini's. They are 6 ply. They have riveted seams :( . They are B/O rounded badges, which tells me '78-'79. The drums have been left in some heat somewhere, sometime over the years, and the wrap has shrunk, and cracked in a couple very small places, including the areas around the rivets.

Now, I found them on CL and paid $150 for them. The snare is in very good shape. The spur mounts are cracked off in places. The rubber spur feet are missing. The bass drum is missing all 10 of the claws and T-rods on one side. Badges are in great shape. Were they worth it? I say yes. If I were to resell them, how much do you think I should ask?

Is there any sort of epoxy or anything I could squeeze into these small cracks in the finish?

Thank you!

Definitely worth it. I happen to love 6-ply Luddies.

Too hard to guess on the damage without seeing pics..

Resale..why?

I don't want to really sell them unless I have to. I was more or less asking how much I could sell them for if I have to. I love them a lot. Sorry for that miscommunication.

Anyway, I will try to get some pics of the damage for you later on. The cracks in the wrap are only a couple millimeters wide and range from an inch to about 2 1/2 inch long. There aren't that many of them (2 or 3 across the entire set. I was thinking of maybe masking the "lips" of the cracks with tape and applying an off-white fingernail polish into the groove only, and wipe off excess from the actual wrap. In less words, try to fill the gap with polish, not get any on the wrap, only treat the exposed wood. I know that's a no-no as far as collectibility is concerned, but I think it would look nice.

The thing that kills me is the spur mounts. They seem to be crumbling away on a certain side. Do you know where I could get some of these that are brand new remakes/replacements, or will I have to pay $70-80 each for real ones on eBay (don't forget that my bass has 2 sets) that will more than likely do the same thing when I start gigging again?

Anyway, I appreciate all the help. Thank you a lot!

And I want to say they are Super Classics. Would I be correct in this assumption?

Nope. They're not Super Classics. The Super Classic is a 22/13/16/Supra configuration.

What you have is (I think) closer to something called a "Rock Beat" or possibly a "Pro Beat" -can't recall right now.

Either ebay, or I think if you look through the For Sale section, weren't there a pair in there this week? I know I saw some recently...in the last day or three.

There are some on eBay right now, but they are a bit more than I want/can afford to pay right now.

I have a set of Classics, I think, they are black, with sound reinforcement rings, from the 60's AND 70's. Maybe I will sell them or part them out to my new kit. They are mutt rewraps. They floor tom has a keystone badge, the 12 inch tom has a B/O badge, and the bass drum is a Rocker. I bought them on eBay.

I could just steal what parts I can off of it and sell the rest to finance the new project. I wish it had disappearing spurs, but it had Rocker ones.

Well, here is one of them...and it is the large one. Good seller as well, communicates well.

Close but no cigar.....These are Classic Maple series.....6-ply were known by that moniker back then. Super Classic maple would have been the 4-ply shells that they produced in Monroe a couple of years after these drums were made.....thinner more resonant shells.

The super classic that Olugs refers to is the set configuration that ludwig used to sell back in the mid-70's when they were still producing 3-ply shells with reinforcement hoops. There was no kit offered in your configuration, sounds like something someone ordered back then...btw, the rounded B/O badge lasted until 1984, so these could be early 1980's drums as well.

Again, another one of those..."did he really say that"...moments. 26-15-18 and the Coliseum 8" snare...who the hell, where on earth, what...I can only name one band that filled up enough stadiums for that many years to want drums that....huge. And they did it year in, year out for 30 years..well, not that many years filling stadiums, but the last 15 years they played they filled up all the monster stadiums in the country, each and every year, all summer long...can you guess who it was?

But neither of the drummers played Ludwigs. One is a dedicated N&C guy..the other just has a stage full of of every imaginable drum, pad, midi, stump....whatever he can beat on and get a tone out of...The Beam....that was a monster sound....especially when you are tri....well, not in your right mind....
