New Member, with a couple of questions

Loading...

Hey there everybody,

Being a new member I have a couple of questions, so here goes......BTW this is a great forum

I've recently added to my snare collection a solid maple shell snare that the owner said was a Radio King snare, serial # 53898.

The drum's in great condition.

I work at the oldest flute manufacturing company in the country so it allows me to be able to give my drums a pretty good rehab and repair when needed, no flute jokes I hear 'em all day........

Here's the question, when Slingerland brought back the Radio King in 63' what did they offer as to a choice of strainers? Was it pretty much everything that was on the market that you could order or was it limited?

It came with a Zoomatic that worked fine but was a little pitted so I swapped it out with one I had in inventory.

Second question is regarding their putting vents in their drums other than the snares. When did this become formality and could you order them without?

I recently found the second floor tom for my WMP kit that I'd been looking for to finish my rehab project of building a Buddy set up that had no vent and consequently no badge.

It was in pretty good condition and is dated inside as being made in 1965.

The set came with dual mounted toms, 9x13 & 10x14 that I'll replace the dual set-o-matic with a single set-o-matic soon.

Have put Slingerland calf's on the 2 floor toms and a Radio King calf on the

9x13, the snare has an AmRawCo (American Rawhide Co.) calf head that I found brand new in the box from around 1950-55.

They all SOUND!!

Being a big Buddy fan and lucky enough to have seen near 40 times I do enjoy the trivia and information that's here.

Thanks, as BR used to say" stay off the salt stay off the sugar but keep swinging"

I knew that about the Radio Kings and the vent holes.

I should have been more specific, I was wondering about in general when did make ir a matter of course to put the vent holes in the general production of drum, toms ect.

The set is not a Radio King set as you can probably tell.

It's a early 70's, probably 71'-73' is my guess.

The second floor Tom is from 65' and the snare based on that serial number would be 64ish - 65ish???

Thanks for the input :-)

Most likely you are aware ... but I thought it might need mentioning ... a Buddy kit (80N) had two bass mounted cymbal holders and two pair of the older thinner spurs ... if you're trying to nail it. By the by, your kit is sweet. I love the old large chip WMP. Very nice.

I have a Buddy kit in Mahogany that wears calf. It's a 71 build.

Thanks Roger !

I do have the cymbal mounts ( floor tom leg lugs) for the ride and splash to put on the bass.

I'm looking for both cymbal "L's" for the splash & ride.

They're on eBay now and then so I'll most likely grab them in the next week or two.

The bass spurs I'm still not sure if I'll put them on, it's no be deal to do it, so I probably will just to as you say make it right.

Regarding the vent hole or badge hole question.

Late '66 is when badges were added to Slingerland floor and ride toms.

Badges were only on bass and snares till then.

Now, that has been debated before here as to the date, and some cats have earlier than '66 toms with badges, but for the very high majority '66 is the date.

My 65 floor has no badge. I'm with Kevins on this one.

Thanks guys, I did put a badge on it not so much for appreance but the drum sounded a little muddy and not full.

Or at least as full as the other florr tom.

It's mate is the vintage of the rest of the kit, circa 1970-73.

I've got Slingerland calfs on both and there still is a definte difference in the two drums, the 65' still is a little behind in sound compared to its younger half brother.

I'm thinking the snare is most likely an Artist, having a Zoomatic strainer on it. If it is a solid shell, you have a pretty rare bird there, not a lot of the Artists were actually solid shelled, though the catalog lists them that way.

This info is from Dr Wenk's articles on Slingerland drums, found in the Drum Guide linked to the Forum.
