New Canister Throne Project!!

Loading...

Just thought I'd share the "before" pic of my Newest project....

For my whole drumming career, I have wanted a canister throne.

Finally, after 36 years I have acquired my first one, and will be restoring it to match my set. I dont have to tell you guys how rare canister thrones are!

I was VERY lucky to acquire this one at a good price. It appears to be a 1950s throne, altho it has no badge and never did!

As you can see, the throne is covered in Aged Gold Sparkle wrap.

Whats remarkable is that other than that long crack you can see, the REST of the wrap is in very good shape except for what looks like a cig burn on the other side. The wrap cleaned up very very well with simple green cleaner.

I was even tempted to just patch the broken part , and then get some Novis and polish the heck out of it, but I decided to go the whole way and rewrap it in WMP.

The metal rings that go above and below the wrap are off. They looked to be in terrible shape, in fact, I thought I'd have to use 1 inch Chrome tape there instead....BUT, after a long soak in Dawn, they cleaned up fantastic, and they will be reinstalled with new chrome screws when I finish. I'm very happy about this.

The seat is in pretty good shape as well and will shine up well with some Armorall.

I'm very excited to finally have a canister throne after all these years. Cant wait to bring that to a gig and have young drummers come up to me and ask "what is that"??

Nice! I've been kind of looking for one too. There was a nice mint Slingy canister on fleabay in light blue pearl. I was in till it hit and soared past $200 and it sold for $490 plus $39 shipping!! Yikes!! Yours will look cool in WMP. Sounds like a fun project. Yep cleaning up the old original hardware is the way to go. Have fun.

Thanks FFR!!

By the way, Ludwig is making Canister thrones again, on an order only basis.

But they are very reasonably priced, around $350 plus shipping. You might want to check that out. They look to be a little lower than the originals, tho.

Also, they have a black seat, which I think should have been Red.

I just really liked this one and felt it was the "right" one for me.

That's good to know on the Ludwig canister thrones thanks! I would have never guess they made them by order either. Cool!

It is nice and it is minty. I was the one who wound up with it.

And yes it was too much scratch to part with..........but, I was figuring that they don't come along that often and the guy who's in Texas that makes the repro's he wants like $750.00 or $795.00 for his.

That's a great project and wish you well with it. It looks like the "Pack All" type with the hinged top, which are really cool.

The one that I picked up was the standard type with the hollow bottom.

Love to see it when it's finished in WMP.

BGT I'm glad to see a forum member ended up with that one. I've never seen one in LBP and that one's a real beauty!! I was wondering if someone here nabbed it. I was interested being the same wrap color as my kit. But was way more than I could afford. Congrats!! :)

Its not that its rocket science, its that to make a really professional looking canister throne, thats going to cost you just about what a new one from Ludwig is going to cost you (around $350) and the homemade one will always look homemade.

I've never seen on in person. How tall is it and what is the diameter? A shell can be had for around $75 and a sheet of wrap is around $100. If you own an upholstery shop the upholstered top is free. If a guy in texas gets $750-$795 for them, then they must look professionally done. I wonder what all finishes Ludwig offers? I would like to see a close up pic of the bottom of the seat, the bottom of the throne, and the inside of the top of the canister.
