Need ID/appraisal/opinions for crazy cymbal deal: Zildjian, Ludwig Paiste, Wuhan

Loading...

Hi everyone, this is my first post. Had no idea this forum existed!

I just bought a drumset and the owner threw in a whole bunch of cymbals... it was a ridiculous deal: for a 4-piece PDP maple drumkit, a Ludwig piccolo snare, and all the hardware (stands/arms/throne), even including a DW 5000 double-bass pedal, everything came to $600. Insane deal!

Anyways, I can't ID some of the older looking ones. I'm planning on re-selling a few just because there are so many of them, and I am looking to keep a more minimal kit for some experimental rock stuff my band is doing, so it would be great if I could have an idea of what they are worth.

I am aware that Amir II's sounded like crap, but first series of Amir cymbals sounded great on a budget. How much are these worth?

Was this intended as a top or a bottom? It's fairly light.

It says "Swiss Made" on it... supposedly from the 60's?

I know ZBT's are pretty garbage, but hey, he threw it in for free.

This thing is huge. I don't know much about chinas other than Wuhan focuses on them.

Part 3:

This one has a crack in it, so I believe it's close to worthless. Maybe it wasn't even a crash? It is 20" but sounds similar to some dark crashes I've heard, perhaps because of the crack?

This one is also seemingly unpainted...

It has a LOT of overtones and builds up this very dark and ominous wash... I love it. I think I will keep this one.

Final question, how should I polish these? Try to remove all buildup indiscriminately or just wipe them clean with mild polish? Does it just depend?

Thanks in advance, your input is much appreciated!

Dang, that is a deal right there! Those Amir's aren't worth much that I know of, maybe $50 for the pair, same goes for the Ludwig and ZBT and the cracked cymbal.

You can look on ebay at similar cymbals and get an idea of prices, however things are pretty low right now.

Thanks a lot...

I'm just curious, how would I even search the ones without paint? "Vintage Zildjian?" What year do you think they are? Can you judge by the stamp?

And when I weigh them, lighter is worth more, right? Will the Post Office care if I just bring in a bunch of cymbals and not ship anything?

Sorry for so many questions, I am such a newb!!

I beg to differ a bit on the Amirs. They are actually worth about $75-85. They have a bit of a cult following, truth be told. 18's fetch $75, and 20" rides get into the $100 range....You are correct, they are older series Amirs...they actually were pretty good B8 alloy rock cymbals.

It's kinda hilarious...actually, the Amirs were by far the BEST B8 alloy cymbals Zildjian ever made (there are a lotta low cards in that hand ~ ZBT, Scimitar Bronze, Edge, ZXT...eesh.....). I have come across many and they are pretty darn decent.

I agree, the Paiste is worth zero; Old Paiste Ludwigs were NS12 alloy (nickelbronze)...very soft metal with not a great sound, and oftentimes you find them with the sh#t kicked out of 'em...so, there you have one.

The ZBT worth about $20. The Wuhan is worth about $40-50, the other china about $30 or so.

The 17" Zildjian, per the stamp, is a 1970's era one...depending on weight worth between $70-100 or so.

The A Custom 17" is worth about $90-100. That A Custom Ping, about $125 or so.

The 20" A. Zildjian cracked is worth $zero..seriously, the worst possible location for a crack (sorry to say). Too bad, it's stamp reveals it to be a '60's cymbal....

The 22" is also a 60's and from your description of the sound, it's probably a medium-towards-thin at least, which is great...those are classic old rides ! $150-75 if in good shape.

Measure the height of the stamp from the top of the Arabic lettering to the bottom of the English lettering "Made in USA". That will determine whether they are early 60's or late '60's....

1-3/16" tall = early 60's....1-1/2" tall = later 60's.

If I had those, I'd keep the Amir 'hats, the A. Zildjian 17", 22" ride, and the A Custom Fast crash.....all of those are decent to very good cymbals.

Given the brightness of B8 alloy, you can decide for yourself whether the Amirs fit with all the others, which are B20 alloy. If you are interested in selling the Amirs, PM or e-mail me.

Do what you want with the rest.....the Wuhan or other china, eh, it's always nice to have a china around....decide which one is more appropriate for your playing and sell the other one (?) The ZBT...eh, maybe keep it as an auxiliary bottom 'hat.

(The cracked Avedis...well....you can actually take some sandpaper or a dremel or file and file the cracked area so it no longer rubs against itself, then find the 2 ends of the crack with a magnifying glass and drill holes at the ends with a metal drillbit..this will keep the crack from spreading. Then, it'll at least be usable with no nasty grating sound...or, you can even stick 2 rivets in each drill-hole and make a sizzle ride out of it).

Some folks go gaga over the A Custom Ping, but yeow.....it's way too headbangin' guitar2 for me....

..so it would be my leading candidate for liquidating into ca$hola....

All in all, yeah, a pretty good deal, indeed !!!...I mean, w/ all those cymbals, the hardware and stands and pedals....it's like getting the actual drum kit for about $10.....Walking

PS ~ if you wanna get the green stuff off of the cymbals...Wrights Copper Cream...2 or 3 applications, wet the cymbal well... and don't rub too hard ;)

Haha Jaye, this is EXACTLY the kind of reply I was hoping for. Thanks for your expertise and gracious detail.

I have yet to actually find a decent spot to set these up and hear them in context of the entire PDP maple kit. It was a RIDICULOUS deal and I sincerely feel guilty because of the probability of this kit being stolen. It's strange, but the guy I bought it from was a real drummer... young kid, maybe 21 years old at most, but he had some chops, which makes me think maybe he was just really desperate. Either way, it was his asking price, so I tell myself I wasn't taking advantage of him.

When I give them all a good play, I will consider you first if the Amirs are not working out for me.

And by the way, I ordered Wright's Copper Cream a few days ago after perusing this forum some more. Lemme get this straight... you WET the cymbal? Like, with WATER? Isn't that bad? I guess not if you wipe it down and treat it with that cream and dry it all off.

Hmmm...21-year olds do stoopid thangs, oftentimes....DOH

Yes, you don't wanna put the cream on a dry cymbal, it is mildly abrasive right out of the container....it'll scratch the surface if not adequately wet.

You wet the cymbal really well, and you wet the applicator sponge really well, then dip it into the cream and gently rub it onto the cymbal surface...don't use a lotta pressure, let the chemicals do the work....all you are doing with the sponge is spreading the now-lathery cream over the surface of the cymbal...

...leave it sit there for a couple of minutes...you will literally SEE the dirt, green, and some patina melting off...then rinse off well under water.

...repeat the step until the green drops are gone...

Then I usually just give the cymbal a washing with mild, biodegradable dish soap, just using my hands to lather it up, and rinse well (the cream leaves some residue that the dish soap washes away).

Just my .02, but I never clean a cymbal except wiping it down with soap and water. The times I did use a semi-abrasive cleaner, it took off the logos and changed the sound. I wouldn't clean the old ones, except for wiping 'em down.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....
