Need Help Figuring out this drum finish / brand

Loading...

Hi, yesterday I came across a tom with a finish I've been hunting for at least 3 years now. I'm going to pick up the kick and floor tom in a few days. I only have one very bad picture, but I thought it would be worth a shot in the dark to see if anyone had any idea what finish this is or who made it.

The finish seems similar to the Red Psychedelic finish by Ludwig, but the colors and pattern are slightly different. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'll try and post more pictures when I get the drums in my possession.

Your drum is a "STAR" made drum M/I/J in the late 60s,Shells can be a 3 ply with rings or 4-5 ply with out rings the good news is that finish is the copy of the Ludwig one and is a rare finish to fine on 60s M/I/J/ drums...Mikey

Very rare Star wrap indeed! Let us see them when you get them home! The lugs are copies of Slingerland Sound Kings. This is an MIJ kit and as such pay attention to other parts as they will be extrremely hard to find.

This is from the 19709 Star catalog, iot is called Lava Pearl. It is one of the rarest. Does not always equate to most valuable, but very hard to find. If you know the price and there is wiggle room, remember, these are MIJ drums. Is the rest of the kit MIA? I ask because finding the matching toms will take a long time. At this point in production, the toms would be 6 ply, all mahogany, no re-rings. There was a short period in this era, from 67-69, that there were some "transitional or experimental" snare ply differences, but not on the toms. I have, or rather had, a 5 ply with rings. It is available for listening, if you can stand it, on my youtube page, "Star Resurection". It got a complete custom finish. Curly Maple veneer exterior with custom lacquer of clear gloss with super-fine flake in it. Very nice, 6-8 coats. This drum has been recorded. I mention that because these old MIJ drums CAN soun d amazing, if you can work them over. Value, not so much monetary, but they can make great recording drums. Some of the finishes, like this one, are more valuable than others, Peacock Pearl is another one that is a better value than the rest. There are a few from Pearl, Star and Yamaha that really are desriabl;e wraps today.

If you are, on the other hand looking for Ludwigs in this color, Psychodelic Red is the Lud color, I know where there is a complete Rock Duo kit from the 60s. It may be available. I'll get with him. If you are not looking for the Star drums, let me know, I am a collector of MIJ drums.

Thanks! I appreciate all the info and how quickly it all came in, awesome. I picked up the drums today. They are a little rough, but I got them for $75 so I'm not complaining, yet. The kick is 20X14 and the floor tom is 16x16. No rack tom :( I love this finish. The Ludwig one is nice, but this one appeals to me way more.

Finding the rack tom is going to be a challenge. In the mean time I suppose I'll begin working with what I have.

Any more info you guys have to offer is always appreciated. Here are some pictures:

Actually I have a few questions. The two pieces of hardware on the bass drum appear to the cymbal mounts but it seems strange there are two. Judging by the two sets of holes around the center I assume this would be where the missing tom mount should be.

Also, as pictured above, the floor tom has a a set of holes next to one of the lugs. There are no other holes around. any idea what these are?

There is one floating around somewhere here. A guy posted some months ago looking for more shells. Maybe the tom you are missing? As for the holes, you are correct, a rail mount that was removed. As for the leg type mpunts on top, you have two, one is for an L-arm, one is for a long leg type of disappearing cymbal moount. I have one of the straight arms if you want to consider it. I also have a rail mount, not sure I want to let it go at this point though.

Would would show the interior of the shells?

Hi, I will definitely look around for the tom. If I end up finishing the drums before I find something I decided to use a 12 and 14 inch roto toms to fill out the kit.

Here are pictures inside the shells. They are a little rough on the inside but it resonates nicely.

This is what i think on the floor tom,it looks like you have all three mounts for the legs on the drum at bottom,if you dont have all three i have some that match the ones you have. But the two holes at top of drum would have been for another floor tom leg mount that would have a rod and a cow-bell on it..Also if you need the lugs for the floor tom and t-rods i have them i maybe be able to help out on the T-rods and claws for the bass drum if they are missing...Mikey

Interesting about the cowbell mount on the floor tom. I havn't really seen that before.

As for missing parts, all the bottom lugs are missing from the floor tom and that one leg mount for the cow bell as well as legs.

The bass drum is missing all the T-rods and claws as well as legs are missing. Some of the lugs will need to be replaced as well because the inside is damaged. I'm also missing the tom mount.
