Mystery Ludwig 20's Disney Bass Drum

Loading...

This is the strangest find and I wonder if anyone knows what could be the origin of this drum. Based on the badge it is a 20's 28x12" bass drum with the usual light fixture inside that makes me think it was used in an ensemble of some sort and that is how I have outfitted the drum with vintage accessories, but a small chain attached to the outside makes me wonder if it was a marching bass drum. Original calf heads with adult-like bubble ladies I guess. What is unusual about the drum is that painted on the crazed surface is Snow White and all the 7 Dwarfs. Any clues for the origin of such a drum and speculation on how it might have been used?

Can't tell you much about it. But what a neat drum. Are all of the image/characters hand painted? If so, great artwork there from what I can see.

What a cool find! Would love to restore something like that, I'm sure it'd be a challenge to preserve the painted Disney characters. Those heads would have to go, though, and therefore wouldn't be too concerned about losing the strange silhouetted girls frolicking in bubbles...seems to clash with the theme a tad. :)

ssoccer:

You may have something quite valuable there, and it has nothing to do with the drum. If those figures are indeed hand painted, they look way too perfect to be done by an amateur of that period. Disney's Snow White was released in 1937, and if that drum was used as part of the promotion, those figures could have been hand painted by the original Disney artists, making the artwork quite valuable to Disney collectors. Any original Disney art from that period is highly sought after and very collectable.

I suggest you inquire about the artwork on some Disney sites and find some Disney experts. Your drum may excite a lot more interest among vintage Disney collectors than vintage drum collectors.

Keep us updated on anything you discover.
