From blairndrums

WFL Drum is LONG gone.........Why do you think it is Luan?I've seen Luan since the late 60's(Apollo drums etc),and this and the WFL I had doesn't look like that.More of a whiteish color, not gold or straw like Luan.

because it looks just like this harmony shell I have that's why?and this is a very early drum, that is luan

Blair, also wfl earliest drums being 1937 did not have a vertical grain it has always had a horizontal mahogany grain, never a luan shell, here is an Inside pic of an early wfl shell, huge difference.

Like I said....drum is long gone...going by memory....

It was a tom also, would that have any bearing on it?

Blair, you don't have to say a thing, memory what memory what was it we're talking about??:) No, the toms ,bass drums, and snare drums, are all built the same way. I think you where remember the wood color more than the grain. we've been at this drum thing to long you know?

so sounds like the consensus is this drum is probably luan and Leedy never used luan?

the paint is correct for that era, I think it's another shell with the leedy strainer mounted to it, but that said luan today looks nothing like old growth luan from your drum and the one that I own, and luan shells with the right bearing edges on them sound great!

thanks everyone for your help!!!

again, if anyone is interested in this drum i'll sell it for not much. marching snares aren't my passion per se (i'm busy piecing together a 70s slingerland kit) and i'd be happy to pass it along to someone who would enjoy it more. so PM me if you're interested. otherwise i might go to ebay with it.
