Thankyou dieconashi. I've never done anything like this before either. I just jumped straight in. Watched lots of videos on you tube, a guy called smiley the jazz cat. Brilliant. Other sites like drumshed and ghostnote are also very helpful. Give it a go my friend. Why not! Can't wait to see you first drum.
my very first drum...finally under way!
DISASTER! My shell has given up. I've had to give up on it. I'm a little gutted about it, but not devastated. The learning curve has done it's job. There's not a lot thats gone wrong, but what has, I know how to correct it. Firstly, USE LOTS OF GLUE! Secondly, get the numbers right. I had the angle of the chamfer correct, but I had the face of the staves wrong. So, the next project is now under way. I'll keep you all posted. Cheerz.
Drowse, hang in there. I destroyed 4 shells before I made a good one. Then recently I was applying a laquer finish on a beautiful Purpleheart shell when it imploded. I had already bought the hardware and heads. I ended up with a 7x13 poplar shell that I wrapped. Poplar is not a pretty wood like oak or purpleheart.
Thanks father time. I'm expecting to have many disasters! It's all part of learning the art of drum building. Thats a nice looking drum too. Very retro. A cool wrap dude.
So sorry to hear that your drum shell didn't make the cut. All that effort, and nothing left to do but keep slogging onward. Hope you aren't disgusted beyond trying again. What exactly went wrong? it collapsed at a failed joint? Is it possibly salvageable? please keep up posted if you decide to give it another go. May the force be with you.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, it took me three tries to build a rideable bike frame. I hope it only takes the second try for your playable drum. It seems like you have already had a couple of learning curves thrown at you in this experience. And I read correctly that you're ready to try another- Good Onya!!!!
Dead dogs like rusty fire hydrants!!!
What went wrong was a few things. Wrong measurements not enough glue the fact that it fell to the ground and opened up. D'oh! So, a little disappointing but I aint giving up. I've got the bug now and i'm gonna keep on keeping on! And I will definately keep you all posted with my endevour. Cheerz vdf.
