my very first drum...finally under way!

I've wanted to make an oak stave snare myself. EZ is correct about the thickness, I remember reading that 1/4 inch is about as thin as you can go with a stave snare. so far I've made maple, mahogany and poplar snares. it's so satisfying when you get to play the drum after all of that work. I can't wait to see your finished drum. . . .James

Jump For JoyHa ha! I like the sound of that old pops time. Do you think a converted kick drum beer keg would work. That would be more than 17 beers! Hee hee.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Calm down glen. Ha ha. I'll post some more pics and tell you more later today. I'm at work at the moment, so I don't have a pc to hand. It's turned out ok. Had a couple of hiccups but nothing major. Tell you more later. Cheerz.

First off, my wife is not going to be happy with you for putting ideas into my head for another project...

That looks like an awesome project! I was just looking at the Brady Jarrah solid stave and Yamaha oak custom snare drums this morning, so it was great to come across your post. You're putting them together! Any ideas on what you want to do for the finish? So many possibilities!!

Excited to see the progress, looks great so far!

My wife is gonna be mad. :)

morning forum chums

so, i've gotten a little further with my drum.

it's been a learning journey for sure.

firstly, i've learned not to be so frugel with glue.

it came apart a couple of times! but with a little patience, and some more glue!!, it's now ready for the bearing edges, staining, and hardware.

i'm going to do a mahogany one next.

with hope that it goes as well.

thanx to everyone's kind responses. i feel i know you all, like i've known you for years!!

brilliant.

here's some pics so far Jumping2

sorry dieconashi, i didn't answer yer questions.

for the finish, i'm just going to treat it, and leave it natural.

a friend of mine has give me the product name, which is - teknos clear base coat, and osmo satin-mat uv protection oil.

it looks like cooking fat, and you just put it on, let it dry, and thats that.

it drys really nice. i've seen wood with it on, and will be more than happy with my drum looking as nice.

glen, i hope you've calmed down now! Cool Dude Cool Dude hee hee.

That looks awesome! I think it will look great with that finish as well. I've been asking my lathe-savvy friends about helping me with one of these, so hopefully someday I'll get one done as well.

Great job! I'm excited to see the end product!
