My New Premier 101 Kit

Loading...

I just picked up a 60's Mahogany Duroplastic kit. 12" pre-internation tom and 20" bass with cymbal arm. It also came with a Speed King pedal.

Funny thing is it was literally up the street from my house. It's dirty, but in very good shape without any cracks in the wrap. It has the original EverPlay resonant heads too. Bass hoops need repainted. They're black, so this helps date the kit to mid/late 60's. They have the 60's style badges too. The tom also has all slotted tension rods and both cast hoops. Based on the Premier catalog, it's possible this was the 101 model without the floor tom. I might look for an orphan floor tom, but I know this wrap is hard to come by, so I'm not sure I'll be successful. I know there is a 16x16 on eBay right now for about $300, but I'm not sure I want to pull the trigger on this just yet.

Once I get it cleaned up, I'll post some pictures.

Here are some before pictures with a lot of dust. The bass drum is so light.

They also have that Premier smell that everyone talks about.

Very nice. The FT may be hard to come by but one will come along eventually. Good score.

Thanks.

The drums actually came to me. I initially took a look at them for a friend that has a student in need of a kit. After about a month, the student ended up not purchasing them, so I asked if he had anyone else that might be interested. No one else, so I asked to contact the seller.

The seller is a big HO train buff and I happened to have some unused scenery/landscaping pieces in my basement. He wanted to get rid of the drums and I wanted to get rid of some train stuff, so we worked out a cash/trade deal.

The seller is a great guy (actually distant neighbor) and we actually talked more about trains than the drums. :) When complete, his display is going to be incredible and when I finish the drums they are going to look and sound great. It was a WIN/WIN.

How urgent is it for you to get a floor tom? I know some contacts over here in Europe (namely UK) who might be of help for you.

Christmas is over, I know, but I still want a vintage Premier kit sooner or later. More like sooner. Yours is nice. Love the wrap.

that worked out well. If you need any wrap for patching (seems like the drums don't have any issues though) or if the eventual FT needs any wrap patches etc, I have a small amount of wrap that I don't need and would be happy to send some to you if you needed it.

Thanks for all of the offers.

Ralf, If something becomes available and the price is right, then I would jump on a floor tom. $300 (US) right now is a little steep. I haven't been watching the market long enough, so this really might be what they are going for.

Fayray, Thanks for offering. I'll keep you in mind, if I need any wrap for a future floor tom or snare. The wrap on the tom and bass is perfect and just needs a good cleaning/polish.

Hi Larry

I have a 1965 set that I had bought brand new...I am the only owner of it....If you know Premiers it is a 58 set...20/12/14 and Royal Ace metal piccolo snare.

It is in excellent condition.I got it in Nov of 65 having had ordered it a few months before. It is aquamarine.basically I have not played it very much in the last 45 years. I am 63 now. They have always been stored in my homes that have always been extremely well climate controlled. The set is original 100%...Only thing I do not have have is the original hi hat stand and when it was new I did not like the BD pedal so I immediately traded it is for a Ludwig Speed King...which is still on the set .it has some original Everplay heads but mostly on the underside of the toms and snare. This is the same set Ringo used to record the marathon session. Here is a photo as some years back my grandchildren wanted me to set up the set and play it for them...which I did but we had just moved into our new home so it was set up for a few days in the storage area.I have incredibly memories and I am really torn about selling it.But I do not want it to go just to anybody but somebody who would appreciate the great quality. The chrome on it is excellent.
